Verse 11 stood out to me today, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. There is nothing more precious than wisdom that comes from God. There are many things we may desire, but without wisdom and the knowledge of what to do with our desires, it will lack value. We must seek God’s wisdom to fully appreciate and use the gifts He has given us.
I like the Message version because wisdom refers to those not paying attention to her as idiots and blockheads. I always like it when the Bible uses those words since they are a common occurrence in my vocabulary :). Though I’m guessing my usage isn’t quite as righteous! This entire chapter is awesome! First of all, wisdom is always referred to as a woman. Our culture often makes women feel as though they are unimportant or insignificant. But nothing is further from the truth! Solomon makes it abundantly clear in this passage that wisdom is the most important, most cherished, most beautiful quality to obtain….and he refers to it as female. Kinda douses water on the whole pregnant and barefoot idea, eh? And then secondly, the entire chapter talks about wisdom with almost the same reverence reserved only for God. I’d never caught that before. That’s just how important wisdom is. I pray daily for wisdom. I don’t know if it’s working but God has yet to let me down on my other requests to be more like him so I can only trust something is sinking in. Now if I could just get my mouth to be quiet when my ears need to be listening…
