Power

When we observe the power of nature all around us (waves in the ocean, wind through the tress), we should be reminded of God’s great power. Psalm 114:7 says, Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. To tremble at God’s presence is to recognize God’s power and authority and our frailty by comparison.

Praise, Thanksgiving

The scope of God’s love is prevalent in the way we loves and provides for all of us the same; rich, poor, oppressed, and free. God’s love does not discriminate and it never rests. And because of this we should never tire of praising Him for his provision. Psalm 113:3 says, From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Just as God never tires of providing for us, we should never tire of remembering where the provision comes from and in turn never tire of praising God for it.

Compassion, Gracious, Righteousness

Especially in the darkest night light shines the brightest. Psalm 112:4 says, Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. If we concentrate on being a light in this world, it doesn’t matter how dark the world is around us because our light will shine through. Being a light has its challenges, but if we are to be labeled gracious, compassionate, and righteous, then our ability to be a light that shines through really matters.

Truth, Wisdom

When we acknowledge God as our true source of wisdom we become truly wise. Without God, our foundation is shaky and are likely to make mistakes and foolish choices. Psalm 111:10 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise. “Fear” in this passage means reverence or respect for God’s authority. Too often people think they can gain wisdom from life experiences and academics alone. But without God’s wisdom in our lives, we skip an important step and fail to take advantage of the true source of all wisdom.

Faith, Trust

Because of it’s clear references to the Messiah, this is one of the most quoted Psalms in the New Testament. Psalm 110:1 was quoted by Jesus in Matthew 22:41-45 and made it clear that David was referring to the Messiah, The Lord says to my Lord: ” Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” No matter the circumstance or how long they last, God is in control and his plan continues to be perfect. In the end, God will remove evil from this world and will take back control over evil influences. Trust in His plan and have faith in His commitment to protect and love us.

Psalm 109

Faith, Trust

In Psalm 109 David is basically venting to God. He is frustrated with the liars and slanderers. David pleads with God to live up to His name (according to His character) in Psalm 109:21, But you, O Sovereign Lord, deal well with me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. Believe it or not, God is ok with our venting. He is not hurt or offended when we have had enough of the twisting and spinning justifications of this lost world. When we plead for God to act, He hears us. He will act according to His will, which means it may not be in our timing, but God does not ignore our pleas. Trust in Him and have faith in His perfect plan!

Power, Protection, Strength, Victory

With God we can do anything. God’s strength is more powerful than anything put up against us. In Psalm 108:13, David ends the Psalm by saying, With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. The beauty of David’s request is not that he asked for rescue, he asked for victory. With God’s help we can claim more than simple survival, we can claim victory! Let us all look for ways to turn our troubles into powerful opportunities to show God’s love and strength in our lives.

Love, Praise, Salvation

Today’s Psalm was written as a praise to God after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon. Whether we have lived lives of hardship or relatively easy lives, God deserves our praise. In Psalm 107:32 it says, Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. God’s great love for us should give us all the reason we need to praise and worship Him openly and freely for all the world to see. Thankfulness should never be far from our lips if we know we have been saved by Him.

faithfulness, Love, Relationship

Psalm 106 give a summary of God’s faithfulness, which in turn shows us the degree of man’s sinfulness. The good news is God’s faithfulness is greater than the gap created by our sinful nature. Psalm 106:1 says, Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Without God’s unfailing and eternal love for us, sin would keep us from enjoying a relationship with Him. God never stops wanting a genuine relationship with us. Praise God for His love and His never ending pursue of relationship with us.

Faith, Hope, Love, Trust

My apologies for not posting the last few days, but I am finally back. Today we are in Psalm 105. While this Psalm is a bit longer than the average, it speaks in detail about the history of Israel in relation to their time of captivity in Egypt and how God delivered them. This Psalm uses the remembrance of God’s mighty miracles for Israel to encourage us to trust in God and keep close to Him in both good and bad times. Psalm 105:1 says, Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what he has done. Because of God’s ability and desire to deliver us, we need to share of His blessings with others to encourage them to look to God in their time of need. Praise God for loving us and delivering us.
