2014 Day 243 – Tim Keller: Interpreting the Bible

Faith, Reflection

I am starting to really enjoy listening to Tim Keller. In today’s reflection post, this short video talks about how Bible interpretation differs from one part to the other. Ultimately, I agree with Tim Keller that the Bible is not meant to be interpreted literally throughout. However, we must be careful to not say it is literal or not literal as a whole. It is through prayer and study we can know the difference. The important thing to remember is it is God inspired and it is His message to us.

2014 Day 242 – Psalm 117

Love, Trust

While today’s reading consists of only two verses, it is a great reminder of why God deserves our praise. The second verse stood out to me the most, For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. God loves all of us with no exception. His faithfulness is complete and it is perfect.

Love, Power

Today, Psalm 46:1 immediately caught my eye, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. God is always there to help and provide peace and security. If we learn to trust in Him, we realize His power is complete. He never fails to be there because He loves us.

Protection, rest

God is not limited by our geographic location or my our spiritual maturity; He is always with us and in him alone do we find protection and rest. Psalm 62:1 says, My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. No matter where we are or what we are feeling, God never abandons us.

Obedience, Trust

In today’s reading Psalm 138:8 stood out to me, The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever – do not abandon the works of your hands. When we submit to God’s plans for our lives, we make the most of it. We must always remember God’s plan for us is perfect. When we try to compete against Him and His purpose for our lives, we do not experience all we were meant to be.

Love, Protection

Psalm 121 is all about God’s untiring protection of us both day and night. He is not only our creator, but He also has power over everything and is able to keep us from harm. Verses 1 and 2 says it all, 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. When we take our eyes off of creation and look to the Creator, we find all we need in the power and loving protection of the Lord God Himself. We will never outgrow our need for His watch over us.

Courage, Eternity, Protection

Psalm 23 is one of David’s most iconic Psalms. When he wrote the Psalm he describes the Lord as a caring shepherd and dependable guide. By submitting to God’s commands, David expressed his understanding that God was his only hope for eternal life and security. Most people recognize verse 4 as one of the most well known verses in Bible, whether they are “religious” or not, because of how frequently it is quoted; 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. While David was one of the bravest men to walk the face of the earth, even he recognized that God was the only one who could walk him through death. No one gets out of this world alive, but God gives us the ability to walk through death in this life and onto eternality with Him in the next.

2014 Day 236 – Tim Keller: True Happiness

Happiness, Reflection

If all we do is seek happiness, we will never really have it. If our number one priority is to serve God, we will get happiness through it. One of the most profound statements in this video is, “Aim at heaven, you get earth through in. Aim at earth, you get neither.” The less we are concerned about happiness and the more we are concerned about Him, the happier we will be.

Freedom, Obedience, Salvation

When Christ came to save us from our sin, He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Meaning; God’s commands are still important because they help direct our path, but we are no longer slaves who rely on the Law to save us. Psalm 119:165 says, Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. By using God’s command to help direct our path, we are given clear and safe direction for how we are to exist in this life free from the bondage of sin’s control on our lives.

Obedience, Trust

When we walk through the woods at night it is easier to have a light at our feet to light our path and to keep us from tripping over objects in our way. The same goes for God’s word through the Bible; it leads us and shows us the path through the darkness in this world. Psalm 119:105 says, Your word is a light to my feet and light for my path. When we study God’s word He reveals the right path for us as we live out this life.
