Obedience, Relationship

Tomorrow we will resume our daily reading routine. But for now, I have one more “Reflection” post to share. I thought I’d share another one of my favorite Francis Chan clips from one of his talks. Francis Chan challenges us to really contemplate how much risk we take for God in our lives and how much effort we really make to impact the kingdom. I hope you enjoy this short clip. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

2013 Day 30 – Skit Guys – Idol Worship

For today’s reflection, I came across another Skit Guys video. This one was both timely and convicting. At first it annoyed me, then the more I thought about it the more I felt convicted for the importance I place on a lot of things in my life. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know your thoughts…

2013 Day 29 – I Am Second – Remi Adeleke

29 Tuesday Jan 2013

Yesterday was our final reading for the month of January. As a reminder, this year’s reading plan only has 25 reading days per month with breaks to allow for reflection and some time to catch up if you’ve fallen behind. I will post something different for the next couple of days as we wait for the start of February’s reading. Please take the next couple of days to look back at the month and reflect on all God has revealed to us and taught us through the reading of His word. Thank you to all of who come back each and every day. I encourage you to keep checking back each day to maintain that daily habit.

Today I wanted to share this video I came across in I am Second that really spoke to me. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think.

Protection

What stood out to me in today’s reading was how much the passages in Exodus and Psalm 23 fit together. Whenever I read Psalm 23 I find it to be very calming. I figured the best thing to do is share the entirety of Psalm 23:

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Grace, Mercy

There were a lot of plagues in today’s reading and the thing that stood out to me through it all was God’s mercy. I know, it seemed like He was pretty relentless with the Egyptians, but He kept giving them chances to listen and obey Him. For example, if you look at the plague of hail, He did not destroy all of the crops. He allowed the wheat and spelt to be spared. When Pharaoh once again disobeyed God, He went ahead and destroyed the rest of the crops through the plague of locusts. This is a great example of God’s mercy to us. God will continue to show us grace and mercy through the sin in our lives, but if we continue to disregard His forgiveness and grace He will eventually allow our sin to destroy us.

Power

What stood out to me today was how God made Moses seem like ‘God’ to Pharaoh. Exodus 7:1 said, Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. Moses’ authority came directly from God and He made Moses someone Pharaoh would listen to; almost as if he were a peer. God is able to make us have whatever authority is necessary to accomplish His will. We must realize how powerful we can be when we allow God to work through us.

In our reading in Psalm 22, I found the first part of verse 1 very interesting. It was the same verse Jesus quoted when He was hanging on the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? What is really interesting is how much David prophesies in this Psalm and accurately describes how much Jesus suffered on this cross.

2013 Day 25 – Exodus 1-4, Psalm 21

Power, Trust

As we begin reading the story of Moses, the part that stood out to me is found in Exodus 4:11-12, 11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Too many times I limit God’s ability to do great things in my life because of my own perceived limitations. The reality is God created me and can do more than the limitations that exist in my life. When Moses argued with God, he was reminded that God can do anything. The truth is I need that same reminder each day. God is greater than me and is able to anything He wants because He is God.

Faith, Relationship

As we finish the book of Mark today, I can’t help but feel like I just ran a marathon. There is so much information in those last four chapters and its hard to summarize everything. The thing I will point out, if it isn’t already obvious, is chapter 13 is prophesy straight from the mouth of Jesus’. Everything He talks about in reference to His return is exactly what we should be looking for in relation to His return. The reality is there are no guarantees Jesus will come in our lifetime or in the lifetime of the next 20 generations, but we are still supposed to be on the lookout for Him and live our life’s as though time really is limited.

Relationship

Today we see Jesus taking the religious leader out to the “wood shed”. The religious leaders continually try their best to stump Jesus or catch him in a lie until we reach Mark 12:34, When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. In the end, some of the leaders showed they understood the principles, however they missed the final piece of believing that Jesus really was the Messiah. This gives us important insight into understanding the importance of studying God’s word, along with applying what we read to create true relationship with God.

Reflection, Sacrifice

Mark 8:35 is always a good reminder of what my priorities should be, For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. It does me no good to be concerned with self-preservation in this life, when the only life that matters is my life in eternity. As I start a new job today, this is a good nudge to remember my true purpose in this life. While I do not want to beat people with the gospel of Christ, I do need to be a reflection of Him in my life. I must keep Him in the front of my mind in all I do today and everyday.
