Peace, Reflection

My friend Ellen started an awesome campaign called the Supermodel Astronaut Challenge to help young girls recognize ‘I Am Enough’. As the father of 3 teenage girls, I love what she is challenging young (and older) women to recognize; that for the most part, the things they believe about themselves and what the media feeds them, are simply not true. The full pledge and a better description of the challenge can be found here, Supermodel Astronaut Challenge. Below is a fun video and song she developed. I hope you enjoy it and take the time to embrace what this powerful message.

2014 Day 333 – Mark 11

Righteousness, Truth

When Jesus cursed the fig tree in Mark 11:12-14, the same words could have been applied to the nation of Israel. Just like the tree, which had the appearance of being fruitful, Israel was spiritually barren. We must always reflect on our own lives and strive for more than the appearance of having our lives all together. Appearances can be deceiving, but God knows our heart. Being honest with ourselves is as important as being honest with others and especially God.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

The parable of the King’s Ten Servants in today’s reading is sometimes used to talk about money and using it to further the Kingdom. And while money could be one of the gifts God gives us, it is more about fully using any of God’s gifts. The parable is summed up in Luke 19:26, He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.’ If we want to see the Kingdom of God grow and we trust in Him, then we must be faithful to use the gifts He has given us.

Faith, Righteousness, Salvation, Thanksgiving, Trust

The contrast of the two men in the parable of the “Two Men Praying” in Luke 18:9-14 was very apparent. The first man was proud of the accomplishments he had done for the Lord, but God wants us to come to him humbly knowing we are unable to be perfectly righteous without Him. Matthew 18:13 depicts the second man, a tax collector, and how he approached the presence of God. But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God have mercy on me, a sinner.’ Without God’s mercy and grace we are nothing more than a common sinner and we are unable to attain enough righteousness to fulfill any of the requirements needed to be in God’s presence. Let us be thankful on this Thanksgiving Day for God’s provision of eternal life through His precious gift of Jesus Christ His Son.

Faith, Relationship, Trust

An interesting and often misconstrued verse is Matthew 21:22, If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. When Jesus spoke these words He was not giving us a blank check. Our requests must be in line with God’s principles and ultimately bring glory to Him. The best way to ensure this is to grow closer to God so that we can be more in line with His will when making requests of Him.

Salvation

As we read the parable of Equally Paid Workers in the beginning of Matthew 20, keep in mind that Jesus is not talking about equal pay, He is talking about salvation. While God wants us to be obedient and to live a righteous life, salvation is available to all people no matter what they have done and no matter what stage of life they accept Christ’s gift of salvation.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

When Jesus spoke about the difficulty of a rich man getting into heaven, He was talking about the difficulty of surrendering completely to God’s will. When we put our trust in our own accomplishments we will eventually fail, but not when we trust in the power of God. Mark 10:27, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” When we give up on our own abilities and trust God, we give into the possibility of experiencing more than we ever thought possible.

2014 Day 327 – Francis Chan: We Grossly Underestimate God

Obedience, Power

I’ve shared this video before but I thought it was worth another look. We tend to limit God’s ability to use us for His glory and for eternity. But God wants to use each and every one of us for great things. We don’t always feel like it, but God commanded us to be available for the small and big things.

Faith, Power, Trust

It is easy to get caught up in the craziness of this life and feel completely out of control. But when things feel the most chaotic, we can have comfort in knowing that out of chaos God leads and makes all things possible. Matthew 19: 26 says, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Our faith should lie in the knowledge that the creator of the universe has it all under control. When we feel the least empowered, we can rest assured that God is neither surprised or intimidated by it.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

God asks very little of us and at the same time He asks a lot. Faith is simple and yet incredibly complex. In Luke 17:6 Jesus says, He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” Through our faith we can accomplish great things through God’s power. We simply need to trust and obey Him and know He has the power even if we do not.
