2016 Day 60 – Matthew 20

Hope, Reward, Sacrifice, Trust

It is not our place to question who God allows to be blessed differently than us. If God chooses to allow others to be rich and us poor, we should be content because He still provides for all our needs. In the end, it is up to God to decide. In Matthew 20:16 Jesus says, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” This is not a guarantee, but a promise. Our reward on earth pales in comparison to what is in store for us in heaven. For this reason it is more important for us to work on eternal versus earthly reward.

Freedom

When the rich young man asked Jesus what he needed to do to go to heaven, we see Jesus’ reply in Mark 10:21, Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Jesus really did love the young man, just like He loves all of us because He does not want to see any of us out of His will. But in the end, Jesus gives all of us freedoml to choose or not choose Him. It’s sad when we move in a different direction, but that is what real freedom looks like.

Faith, Salvation, Trust

When the disciples asked Jesus who could really be saved, Jesus replied in Matthew 19:26, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The beauty of Jesus’ reply is how true it is for all things. When we believe and trust in Jesus all things are possible. This doesn’t mean our will is done, it means God’s plan is perfect and will happen no matter the circumstances.

Faith, Trust

In today’s reading, I love Luke 17:5, The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The apostles we genuine in their request. They wanted to be radically on-board with Jesus. The problem is they did not fully understand what they were asking. To truly follow Jesus we must be fully committed. The path will always be tougher than we can ever imagine. But once we let go, our faith can be as small as a mustard seed and we can move mountains.

Faith, Hope, Trust, Truth

God’s will and His plan are perfect. As believers we do not need to fear the craziness and uncertainty of this world. In John 11:9-10 Jesus responds to His disciples concerns over returning to Jerusalem, 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not 12 hours in the daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. 10 It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.” “Day” refers to being in God’s will. As long as we walk in the light of His guidance, we will be OK. It is when we allow fear and uncertainty to rule over us that we stumble and fall.

Obedience, Servant

Jesus made it very clear in today’s reading you must pick who you will serve. Either you need to look to God and serve Him, or you can look to the desires of this world. In Luke 16:13 Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Jesus is not saying that working to make money is bad, He is saying it is bad when you make money the most important thing in your life. Trying to justify you need to have money to serve God is nothing more than an excuse. God doesn’t need your money, He wants our obedience and willingness to serve with all we have including our most important possession: Time.

Grace, Love, Mercy, Repentance

God asks us for nothing more than repentance. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father did not require anything of the son in order to welcome him home with open arms. In Luke 15:21 the lost son comes to his father, “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'” There was nothing more needed by the father, just like there is nothing needed of us for God to accept us just as we are. No where does it say we must become perfect for Him to accept us. Our change comes from our relationship with Him. Our obedience and love for God comes because He first loved us.

Salvation

In today’s reading Jesus tells the parable of the great feast. The parable was really about the rejection of Jesus by the Jews. In the end, because the Jews refused to accept Jesus as Messiah, the invitation for salvation was opened to all people. The last verses of the parable plainly states the outcome in Luke 14:23-24, 23 “Then the master told the servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country and make them come, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'” As a result of the Jews rejecting Christ as savior, we are the adopted children of God, and as such, we receive the same inheritance.
