31 Monday Dec 2012

Well, we finally made it and it was even a leap year! 366 days of reading through the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. I want to thank each of you who read along and shared your thoughts this past year. Each of you, who took the time to comment, blessed me with a new and challenging perspective each and every time. It is my hope that you choose to continue reading in 2013 and maybe invite others to join. Our new reading plan is The book-at-a-time Bible reading plan. I will continue to post each each day, but with the breaks that are built into the plan I will try to find other things such as videos or links to additional materials. If you find anything, please do not hesitate to share and I’ll be happy to post it.

Once again, thank you all for joining us this past year. May you and your family have a blessed 2013!

Wisdom

As I read this morning, I could not help but think of my wife. From verse 10 where it starts with, A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. She is an amazing woman who deserves to be praised in all she does. I am blessed!

Protection, Trust

This morning as I read Proverbs 30:7-9, I was reminded of a video blog entry by Francis Chan from 2008. For the record, I do not necessarily agree with his entire notion about money, but it was a powerful thought that really challenged me. It made me think about how little I rely on God and how I need to trust in Him more than my own abilities. If you have time, watch the video and see if it at least challenges you to look differently at God’s provision for you in your life.

INFORMATION: Suggested Reading Plan for 2013

29 Saturday Dec 2012

Posted by Dino Evangelista in Information

For 2013, I have been contemplating what the reading plan could, or should be. One of the frustrations of trying to read the entire Bible in one year is there is very little room for falling behind. If you miss a day or two it can be very intimidating to catch up and feel like you can still make all the reading in one year.

In doing some research, I came across The book-at-a-time Bible reading plan. This plan provides two readings for each day, though you could read it all in one sitting. The first reading alternates between Old and New Testament books, giving you three or four chapters a day. The Gospels are spread throughout the year. The second reading takes you through a chapter or so of the wisdom literature and Isaiah. Combined, these readings will take us through the entire Bible in one year.

To prevent the frustration of falling behind and to provide some reflection time, each month consists of only 25 readings. You’ll have several days each month to meditate more deeply on something that was significant to you in the past week, to catch up on missed readings, or to revisit favorite passages. With this plan, there is room to catch up and there is also room for additional material throughout the month.

Let me know what you all think. It looks like there are some regular participants in our daily reading and I would love to hear your opinion on the suggested 2013 reading plan. As always, I would love to read daily comments on the daily readings throughout the year.

Grace, Obedience

In today’s reading the first verse stood out to me, A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. Doing the same mistake over and over is an invitation to disaster. We must learn from our mistakes, accept God’s grace, then move on. But when we continue to do the same mistakes over and over, especially when we actively rebel against God, eventually we have to accept the consequences of our sin. God gives us grace freely, but His grace is not a free pass to do whatever we want.

Repentance

In today’s reading I could not help but think of our country when I read verse 2, When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order. As a country we follow many rulers depending on our political affiliation. When we as a country decide to stop being so rebellious and follow God, we will no longer have this issue and will be able to unite behind the right leader.

Fellowship

Verse 17 stood out to me today, As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. It is important to have people in your life that help build you up. The opposite is also true; you must remove people who tear you down or who lead you in the wrong direction.

Wisdom

Today’s standout passage is verse 20, Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. One of the great things I’ve learned working for Dave Ramsey these past four years is the danger in allowing gossip to be a cancer around you. Nothing good can come from it and without it, the flame goes out.

Obedience

Verse 28 stood out to me today, Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. Self-control may limit us, but it also protects us from outside forces that can hurt us or sway us from what is right.

Obedience

The first verse in chapter 109 stood out to me, O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent. How many times have you waited on The Lord when you are begging Him to answer your prayers.
