As Americans we have it easy, but persecution is something we must be prepared to endure. In the end, God will have the final say. In Psalm 79:10 it says, Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.
I was curious about the origin of these 2 Psalms because they seem almost out of place, so un-David. So I looked it up, and it’s un-David because it was written by Asaph. Both 74 and 79 were. It’s guessed that he wrote these when he was about 100 years old after he had served David and Solomon as the head music director at the Temple. He was a man who had been severely disillusioned. He loved David and had lived under the “golden rule”. He knew that the Messiah would come through David’s line. And he had great respect for Solomon until Solomon turned his back on God. These 2 Psalms are his cry to God while Shishak, the kind of Egypt invaded Israel. How difficult it must’ve been for this man to watch his great nation go from absolute greatness to being plundered by their enemies! I understand his cry to God for salvation, his questioning of God for allowing this to happen…but in the end, the reason this happened was a natural consequence of terrible leadership by the kings, by corruption at the highest level of government. God doesn’t save us from the consequences of our bad decisions. He can make good come out of it, but he allows us to face our consequences. The nice thing, though, is that his story is always a story of redemption, so even though we may walk through the consequences of our behavior, he is walking along side us if we let him.
So, Dino, yes, I understand your comment about persecution, but the Jews were not being overrun as persecution. Yes, they were hated by everybody (story of their lives), but what was happening to them here really seems to be a result of bad leadership, of the people not being faithful, not being stewards of what had been entrusted to them. That is definitely a parallel to our country.
