Today’s reading is an interesting addition to yesterday’s commentary when I mentioned the importance of not forcing the world to take on my personal view of Christianity. Today the chapter ultimately talks about the purpose of all we do, which is to bring glory to God. Verses 31-33 sum up this thought nicely. 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God– 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. If we focus our attention on bringing glory to God, His glory will draw people to Him. The important thing to remember is that I am a reflection of Christ. I can be a mirror or I can skew what is real. It is my choice and my job as a believer to allow God’s power to show the world what He wants them to see.
I would like to quote the entire chapter out of the message. It is so applicable to our current vulture and the way the church is responding (on the whole, very poorly) . Exchange the food issue with any current hot topic and you’ve got an idea of how to deal with the so – called “culture war”. It comes back stop Jesus everytime. It comes back to lobing people and introducing them to Jesus. Every single time. It’s not telling them how wrong their life is. It’s not telling them what they should be doing. It’s showing them love, grace, kindness and Jesus. Our savior is mighty and all powerful. I trust that he can change any heart that is open and willing. I don’t have to do it for him.
Geez, I could go on and on about this topic! I’m so passionate about it because we’ve got it so wrong. I had it so wrong for long because of the teaching from churches I went to. It’s absolutely heart breaking to me that we are so often living exactly opposite of Jesus. And as a result people are turned off by us. Grrrrrrr….
Ok. I’m done.
