There is a lot going on in today’s reading about Joseph. The part that stood out to me, and one of the things I love about Joseph is found in Genesis 41:16, “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” No matter how much power Joseph received, he never forgot to give God the glory. Even when given the reputation of someone who interprets dreams, he gives God all the glory as the One who blessed him with the ability to satisfy the needs of Pharaoh. This is a great reminder to me; when I think I am doing something awesome, I need to remember the One who gave me the ability to do it in the first place.

If anyone could’ve played the victim card, it was Joseph. He could’ve sat around and moped. But he didn’t. He doesn’t choose victimization. He continued to develop skills. He took the opportunity to learn whatever he could regardless of his situation. And the really interesting part about this story is that his time in prison actually prepared him to be 2nd in command over Egypt. As governor, he had to rule over both rich and poor. When he was a leader under Potiphar, he got the experience leading the rich. In prison, he learned how to lead the poor, the downtrodden…and, well, the guilty – all in preparation for what God had in his plans for Joseph. What a lesson for me! No matter the situation, there is something to be learned, and that learning is in preparation for something down the road. Sometimes we get ourselves into the muck, sometimes it just happens. But regardless, there is something to be learned everywhere, every time.
