God’s grace is an amazing thing. Through His grace we are saved from all our filthy sin. However, there are still consequences to sin, which is why God wants us to be righteous. In 1 Corinthians 6:12 it says, “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. God gives us the right to do anything, but our choices are not always beneficial to us and that is why He wants us to be righteous and follow His commands to protect us.
“But I tell you that not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me. ”
I like how the CEV puts that same verse. And that is the crux of any issue. If something other than your love for God has power over you, then you have to get rid of that thing or ask God to change your heart regarding that thing. That “thing” is different for everyone, hence the gray area where the Holy Spirit reigns and hence the need to not have formulas of do’s and don’t’s within the Christian community. There are some black and whites in the Bible, but there seems to be a lot more gray.
