In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, Paul tells us, while we think we may be at the end of our rope, we are never at the end of our hope in God, 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. God never abandons us no matter how alone we may feel.
So I’m reading the CEV translation, and this passage in chapter 4 is written in a way that changed my thinking a bit. I’m not a scholar, so maybe I’m totally off, but I was taught growing up, using this passage as proof, that some people will never believe because Satan has blinded their eyes to the message…essentially, they are a lost cause. That never seemed to jive with the loving God who draws people to him that I have come to know. The CEV puts this a different way that seems much more congruent to who I know God to be. Yes, people’s eyes have been blinded, but God sent Jesus to shed light, to “un-blind” them. No one is a lost cause. Thoughts?
4 The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like. 5 We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord. He also sent us to be your servants. 6 The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.
I completely agree Sarah. I don’t think God ever writes anyone off until the moment they take their last breath. If anything, I think God continues to draw and nudge and coax people to Him throughout their lives right to the very last possible moment.
