God is God! He created us and brought our lives into existence. Who are we to question His sovereign will for our lives and the lives of those around us. Isaiah 29:16 says, You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? Our job is to obey and be available for His calling on our lives. He ultimately has what is best for us in His mind. We must trust that even if it is not in this lifetime, His will, in the end, will save us. Lamentations 3:22-23 says it best, 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. God’s faithfulness never fails. It is our faith in Him that we should be concerned with most.
Something hit me in yesterday’s and today’s reading. The purpose of God choosing a people group as his was to portray his story, power, love and glory to the world through them. He led them out of Egypt, he parted the Red Sea, he caused manna to come from heaven…he did many huge and wonderful things to show his love and power. But now we come to this book, and his people are suffering and conquered – and he allowed it. To the “ruin” of his reputation, he allowed his people to be conquered and to suffer. You know the conquerors were spitting insults at God, just like those who crucified Jesus. But God, even though he has the power, does not just fix it all at once. He doesn’t try and change things to make himself look better. No, he loves his people through extremely tough love and allows them to reap the consequences of their choices in order that they learn from them and change their hearts. He has always been and continues to be supremely concerned with the condition of our hearts, and he will rake his name and reputation through the mud for our betterment.
That is a great thought!
