Trust is a difficult thing. It requires us to humble ourselves into allowing someone else to care for us. The same applies to trusting in God with all our needs. When we attempt to do it all on our own it creates anxiety and stress in our lives. 1 Peter 5:7 says, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. When we carry all the stresses and worries by ourselves, we show we do not fully trust God with our lives. Sometimes we think the struggles cause by our own sin and foolishness are not concerns of God. But when we turn our trust over to God, He will even bear the burden of carrying the burden from that anxiety as well.
5:6 Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes.
It’s interesting that this verse comes right before the verse about casting your cares on God. Humility is required to a) realize you have a care/anxiety that you can’t handle and b) to actually let go of it and let God handle it.
5:5 …. In fact, everyone should be humble toward everyone else.
This verse really sums up all the instructions given by Paul and Peter on relationships between people. When we act out of humility, we automatically serve others, it is easier to automatically love others, it is easier to honor others. I think if you take this verse and put it together with Jesus’ “greatest commandment”, we’d be a lot better off and we wouldn’t be so busy trying to follow a bunch of rules that don’t matter.
Well said Sarah!
