We are becoming a society where we are more “social” online, yet we are becoming less social in reality. The following video is a poem depicted in a love story showing how we continue to find ways to make it easier to connect with one another through technology, but always results in us spending more time alone and ultimately risking the potential to miss out in the life we are intended to have. God intended for us to be social and supportive in community. You can’t do that through your smart phone as much as we may try.

There are things about our lives that no one knows and in some cases should probably never know. But God knows everything. There is nothing about our lives that can be hidden from Him. Proverbs 5:21 says, For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths. Let us live lives which are not afraid of being exposed to anyone, especially God.

When Solomon was a boy he was given the opportunity to have a request fulfilled by God. Solomon chose wisdom above all else and because of that God blessed Him beyond his request. Proverbs 4:7 says, The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Discipline means “to teach and train”. Discipline sounds negative because some people are not loving disciplinarians. However God is the source of all love. Proverbs 3:11-12 says, 11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. God doesn’t punish us because He wants to see us in pain, but because He has great concern in seeing us developed into who we are meant to become.

There are many ways to gain wisdom. Some people are taught, while others gain it through life experiences. However, true wisdom can only come from God. Proverbs 2:6 says, For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. The more we listen to God’s direction for our lives and follow His leading, the more we gain wisdom that can only come from Him.

Today we begin a stretch where we will leave the New Testament for a few weeks and spend some time reading the book of Proverbs and a few select passages in the book Psalm. The book of Proverbs is rich in wisdom and knowledge. I challenge all of us to find passages that challenge and encourage us each day. In today’s reading in Proverbs 1, I wanted to share the Prologue of the book which gives the purpose and theme of Proverbs:

Well, we finally made it through the book of Revelation. The great thing about this book is it completes the story of Jesus and shows God’s ultimate power over everything on this earth. This is the equivalent of turning to the back of the book which tells the story of our lives, reading the last chapter, and realizing in the end we will win. While sometimes we don’t feel it, God is in control now and forever. Thank you for hanging in there these past 22 days of reading this difficult book. Tomorrow we will begin reading the book of Proverbs, followed by select passages in the book of Psalm before reading through the Gospels through the rest of the year.

Just as God completed creation and Jesus completed the required work of salvation, so will the Trinity of God invite us all into the completed work of judgement that leads to righteousness in the new creation. Revelation 21:6 says, He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.
