Love, Thanksgiving

God’s love is infinitely big, and if nothing else, we should be eternally thankful for this alone. Psalm 107:1 says, Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. If we truly believe this, then we should want to shout it from the mountaintops.

Eternity, Forgiveness

Psalm 106 was written as a song celebrating repentance. It reviews all God had done up until the point of its writing and gives praise to God’s unceasing ability to forgive us and save us from the consequences of our sin. At the end of the chapter in verse 48 the author sums it all up with, Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord. Because of His everlasting love and ability to save us, He deserves our praise for all eternity.

Faith, Trust

We all live our lives in cycles. Sometimes the cycle is up and things are going well with our families, careers, and our walk and relationship with God. And sometimes the cycle is down and we struggle. But God is capable of restoring us. Psalm 85:6-7 says, 6 Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your unfailing love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation. The beauty of our lives and relationship with God is that He is able to restore us. He is able to deliver us from the downward cycle and bring us to a point of salvation from the mire of life. We simply need to ask and have faith that He is able and willing.

Love

In our reading today, Psalm 136 is all about God’s never ending love. As the author talks about all God has done for the people of Israel, he caps every verse with “His love endures forever”, because it does.

Comfort, Peace, Trust

It is easy to talk to the people around us when we are struggling, but there is nothing better than taking it directly to God. Psalm 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is futile to trust in anything more than the one who create us. God knows our circumstances better than us and He is the only one who has the ability to change it or give us peace.

Hope, Peace

As we reflect on last night’s tragedy in Paris, today’s Psalm brought to mind what the people of Paris must be going through after such a brutal attack on their city. Psalm 137:1 says, By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. We must never forget evil exists. Nothing is permanent including the most powerful governments of this world. Our hope, peace, and comfort comes only from God and our relationship with Him.

Joy, Peace

Whether it is physically in a church building or figuratively in prayer and communication with God, we find comfort in being in the presence of the Lord. Psalm 84:4 Blesses are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. True joy is found when we find a way to be in God’s presence.

Trust, Truth, Wisdom

It is easy to look to other people for advice, but the Lord should be our one source of truth. Psalm 40:4 says, Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Eventually people let us down, but the truth will always be found in Christ.

Encouragement, Influence

The more we obey God and refuse to listen to those who reject and disobey Him, the happier we will be. Psalm 1:1 says, Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. Friends and colleagues can have a lot of influence over us. The big question is whether our friends build up our faith and encourage our relationship with God. True friends should help us draw closer to a relationship with God, not tear it down.
