Humility, Protection

When we let a “little” sin into our lives, it is the same as allowing a lot. In 1 Corinthians 5:6 Paul says, Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? There is no such things as a little sin. Sin is sin and it works its way into who we are. Let us be mindful of what and who we allow into our lives.

Grace, Mercy, Salvation

Whether we are believers or not, we are all the same. We are flawed human beings in need of mercy and grace. In 1 Corinthians 4:7 Paul reiterates this, For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? Our salvation does not come from our own efforts, but from Christ. We truly have nothing to boast about ourselves. It is because of Christ’s sacrifice and God’s mercy and grace for each of us that we have eternal life.

Power, Trust

Without God, the creator of the universe, there is nothing. He is all that matters and we are nothing without Him. In 1 Corinthians 3:7 Pauls says, So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. God chooses to use us to impact His kingdom. But without His active participation nothing happens. We must be thankful for His hand in all things, from the simple to the complex.

Knowledge, Wisdom

Our confidence in our beliefs should not come from our own wisdom or eloquence, it should come from our knowledge of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. In 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 Pauls says, 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. Paul does not deny the importance of study and preparation. Instead, he fully acknowledges the importance of the Holy Spirit actively working in our lives.

Truth, Wisdom

It is easy to base our knowledge of Christ on what we see in other believers. But Paul is clear to the Corinthian church when they look to him as the holy example in 1 Corinthians 1:13, Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? Let us always be clear when it comes to who we worship. There are many great men and women who love and follow Christ, and they are great examples, but they are still flawed human beings. Let us not take our eyes off of Christ who is our one perfect and true example.

2016 Day 140 – Acts 19

Truth

Paul gave a great example of how to work with people who are non-believers. When the city clerk in today’s reading tried to quiet the angry crowds, he made a very interesting comment in Acts 19:37, You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. Paul did not have to be rude or disrespectful of the beliefs of other people. He allowed the gospel to speak for itself. It is, however, interesting how much of a reaction the Gospel always creates even in today’s world. It has the power to change everything, which scares everyone.

Faith, Obedience, Wisdom

Our strength and guidance comes from God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son. In 2 Thessalonians 3:5 says, May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. When we humble ourselves and submit to God’s leadership and guidance, we can rest assured we are on the right path and doing God’s will. Jesus Christ was our example of never ending perseverance in doing what is right. May we never tire of it.

Encouragement, Strength

All our hope and encouragement comes from God. In 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 Paul says to the Thessalonian believers, 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. If we look to other people for our hope and strength, eventually they will let us down. But when we allow God to be our strength, He never lets us down.

Faith, Trust

When people hurt us and persecute us because of what we believe, God will have the final word. In 2 Thessalonians 1:6 Paul says, God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you. God has our best ultimately in mind. And while it feels like we may be losing the battle, in the end, God wins.
