Obedience, responsibility

The Christian life is one of action. It is not one of sitting idly by and waiting for God to do all the work. It is also a life of responsibility and taking care of others when they need it and helping others help themselves. In 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 it says, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. God does not desire us to live in a world where we live a frenetic lifestyle. He wants us to live a life where we do not shy away from action, but also one where we are not looking for a fight. We must always look to God for His guidance and his desires for our lives where we serve Him and serve others.

2013 Day 327 – 1 Thessalonians 1-2, Psalm 147

Obedience

Today we being reading the first half of the short book of 1 Thessalonians, which was written by Paul as a letter to the church in Thessalonica (Thessaloniki). This was one of Paul’s first letters and it was written to encourage believers through their persecution. It was also written to clarify questions about Christ’s second coming. Some believed Christ was coming soon, which created confusion and despair among the early Christian church as believers watched loved ones die before the second coming. This was a letter of reassurance and encouragement which we can take as encouragement for ourselves. God’s timing is perfect. We are to continue in our obedience of God in all we do. He will come in His timing.

Trust

God is the only one we can truly put our trust in. When we put our faith in other people, they will eventually disappoint us. Psalm 146:3 says, Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. Even the people closest to us; our spouses, parents, and close friends cannot be fully trusted to fulfill our happiness. Only God can truly be trusted with our hearts. When we trust in Him, He protects us from others potentially hurting us and gives us the joy we need.

Honor

God is worth of our praise. He is worthy of more praise than we could ever possibly give to Him. Psalm 145:3 says, Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. The truth is we are incapable of comprehending all He has done for us or even through us. I have often said that I do not know how people make it through this life without God in their lives. I can not imagine what my life would be like without Him. And yet, there are times I take Him for granted. I must remember God is worthy of my praise, attention, acknowledgement, and respect. He deserves nothing less and so much more.

Obedience, Protection

Sometimes we must hit bottom before God can show us the way back up. With King Nebuchadnezzar, God had to do just that. Even after Daniel prophesied what would happen, the king still praised himself for all he had accomplished. From that point Nebuchadnezzar went from being at the top of his game to the point of losing his mind. It wasn’t until he turned his eyes up to heaven and acknowledge the Most High God that God was able to restore Nebuchadnezzar’s mind and position. God wants us to have fellowship with Him. And while He ultimately does not want to see us harmed, God will allow us to hit bottom in order to come back into fellowship with Him.

Courage, Obedience

Today we begin the book of Daniel which is written by Daniel, a Jew who was taken into captivity by the Babylonians to serve King Nebuchadnezzar. The purpose of the book is to show God’s power in every situation. Though Daniel was forced to serve a foreign conqueror of Israel, God still protected him and gave him success despite his circumstances. We must look to the example of Daniel and know that despite the circumstances we face throughout out lives, God can still accomplish many great things through us if we are obedient and open to serve Him in all we do.

Freedom, Power, Protection

Since we are finishing up the book of John, I thought this would be the subject of this post. But when I read the second part of today’s reading, I realized how much I need these verses in Psalm 142 this morning. I found myself repeatedly reading the last two verses of Psalm 142:6-7 6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. 7 Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me. I often give too much time to the things that can hurt me. I find myself giving poor choices in my life too much freedom. In turn, when it comes time to break away, I find it difficult to do. It was not until I read the first part of verse 7, “Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name.” that I realized it is not in my power that I am set free from power of evil, sin, or hurt in my life, but through God’s power. I know this should be common knowledge, but for some reason it resonated with me this morning.

Peace

One of the most comforting verses in the Bible to me is John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” While we will always face trouble in this imperfect world, God will always walk with us through it. Jesus says plainly that we will face trouble, but because He has overcome it, we can find His comfort.

Salvation

I love reading John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. Jesus chose us first by loving us and offering to die in our place on the cross. With this, He invited us to live with Him forever despite the sin in our lives that separates us from God. Without Jesus making His choice first, we would have no choice to make.

Salvation, Trust

I love the analogy Jesus gives of being the gate for his sheep in John 10:7, Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. A shepherd act as a gate into the pen for the sheep. He is the one who allows sheep in and out and protects the sheep. In the same way, Jesus is our gate and our protector. He is our protector in salvation from our sins and from the evil of this world. Some people may resent Jesus for being the gate to eternal life, but it is through Him that salvation is made simple by believing in Him and accepting His sacrifice.
