Honor

In verses 44-46 it says, 44 Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. My favorite thing about this passage is that Jesus recognizes the most important thing is to reflect God’s glory. He also makes it clear that His purpose is to shine the light back to God. If we believe in God we don’t want to stay in the dark, we want to be in the light and in turn we will reflect His light for all to see.

Faith, Trust

I struggled In today’s reading when I got to verse 24 where it says, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” When I read this passage It always makes me think I do not have enough faith to move mountains, and while I think it is sometimes true, I think there is more to this story. Motives for our prayers and desired outcomes are important. Our faith should always be focused on God and not in the object of our prayer. If we focus only on the object of our requests, then if God refuses we are left with nothing. Our focus should always be on God and the desire to further His kingdom and the realization that He has a perfect plan.

Honor, Thanksgiving

Jesus deserves our praise and we often feel that we need to rebuke others into giving Him their praise as well. When Jesus is making His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the Pharisees begin to rebuke the people for praising Him, Jesus makes a beautiful statement in verse 40, “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Jesus wants our praise, but he certainly does not need it to make Him any more praiseworthy than He already is. Even “the stones will cry out” if people are quiet. It makes it so much more powerful in my mind to know that Jesus doesn’t need me to praise Him because in the end He will receive it whether I give it to Him or not, though I certainly want to be someone who praises Him!

Trust

I tend to get hung up on what God is actually capable of doing. The truth is that I limit God to the things I think are possible. Verse 27, Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” I have to honest here… Sometimes I lose sight of God as the creator of the universe. There are times I put God’s abilities on par with what I’m able to accomplish on my own. I need to be better at remembering that I am never alone and that God never leaves me on my own. He is always there and He wants me to rely on Him for all things not just the big things.

Obedience

When Jesus told the parable of the two sons in verses 28-32, He was talking about the Pharisees. The interesting thing is that this parable applies to us too. How many times have we said that we would pray for someone or give to someone and failed to follow through. Jesus expects us to reflect His image and purpose here on earth. When we fail to follow through, we fail Him and His purpose in our lives.

Grace, Salvation

Here is another verse so many of us take out of context; verse 16, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” The verse talks about non-Jews having equal access to the Kingdom of God as Jews. Somehow we love to use this verse as some sort of “get to the front of the line” verse. It is important to know what Jesus is saying and why he says the things he says. For this verse we must remember that Jesus died for everyone, not just a select few. It is not up to us to figure who to impact, but to remember we are a reflection of Him in all that we do.

Compassion, Mercy

I often read verse 21 and jump to a conclusion that Jesus is simply talking about money, Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” If you aren’t careful you can miss the first few word in the passage “Jesus looked at him and loved him”, even when God corrects us He really does love us. I equate this to my kids and how there are times it breaks my heart when I have to take corrective action, but I never stop loving them. How much more does God love me and how much more does it break His heart?

Faith, Salvation

I know we often take this verse out of context, but I love what Jesus says in verse 26, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The truth is there are a lot of things that are impossible for us as imperfect humans. With God there are no impossibilities. He is the creator of the universe and as such He can do anything and everything. We need to remember that we do not stand alone. When we think we cannot do something, we need to remember that with God anything is possible.

Grace, Repentance

We all sin and we all mess up on a regular basis. Forgiveness is very easy to accept but not always easy to give. Jesus makes it clear that forgiveness is not something we are to give once; it is something we need to give on a regular basis. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.” When we repent God forgives us endlessly, the least we can do is forgive others when they repent to us.

Glory

I love Jesus’ prayer in the second part of verse 41 and 42, “Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”” Even Jesus gives all the glory over to God. How much more do we need to do the same thing. In everything we should realize that God deserves all the credit and glory for all we have and do.
