Faith, Glory, Hope, Trust

Pride creates a sense of self-importance that takes away God’s glory. It also removes our ability to see the simple things in our lives as what has true value. In Psalm 131:1 David says, My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. If we are able to look to God for the simple things and trust in Him for what’s important, then we are able to relax and know He is ultimately in control and all glory goes to Him.

Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy, Salvation

Have you ever thought about what salvation really means? It means forgiveness of our sins and our sinful nature. It is literally God forgetting all the many and creative ways we sin. Psalm 130:3-4 says, 3 If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. If God kept a record of our sin, the burden would continue to be overwhelming. But God removes the weight and eternal consequences of sin and frees us to be who He intended us to be. Likewise, God gives us an example of how we are to forgive others. If we cannot release others from their transgressions against us, then we have not truly forgiven them.

Grace, Holy Spirit, Love, Mercy, Salvation

We are not slaves to unrighteousness. God has set us free by His grace and love. Psalm 129:4 says, But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked. Through our freedom found only through God’s perfect plan, we are no longer tied to sin. That doesn’t mean we are perfect, but through God’s power and grace we have the tools to be free from the damaging power of sin in our lives. Trusting and relying on God’s strength through the Holy Spirit is all we need to conquer sin.

Obedience

The “fear” of the Lord is not meant as a cowering response to God, it is a reverence and respect for our Creator, Savior, and Lord. Psalm 128:1 says, Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. God never stops pursuing us, but it is our acceptance and obedience of Him where our blessing come.

Eternity, Glory, Wisdom

Today’s Psalm was written by the wisest man that ever lived, King Solomon. And true to form, his words of wisdom speak volumes in Psalm 127:1, Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen guard in vain. Accomplishments in this life mean nothing unless they come from the Lord and are done for His glory. With few exceptions, most of our accomplishments will be forgotten within a few generations of our passing. Wouldn’t it be better to accomplish things that have meaning for eternity?

Faith, Hope, Trust

It’s hard to imagine how a burned down forest is restored in just a few short years. God’s ability to restore is beyond our ability to comprehend. In Psalm 126:5-6 the Psalmist paints a picture of a farmer sowing seeds with faith they will turn into a harvest, 5 Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. If we have faith, we know God can turn even the greatest sorrows in our lives back into joy if we allow Him to restore us. Remember: God’s harvest of joy will come because He has the ability to fully restore us if we let Him.

Protection, Righteousness, Wisdom

When we have repented and turned our way from evil, wisdom should tell us to walk away from temptation that can lead us back into sin. Psalm 125:3 says, The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil. Once we have entered into righteousness, let us be smart enough to stay away from the triggers reminding us of our sin and the things that could lead us back into sin. We should be diligent to ask God for his protection from temptation and the strength to stay away. Let us fill out time, hearts, and desire with the things that please God and have an impact on the eternal.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

There is no problem which is too big for God. If He is the creator of all things, then our problems are not too big for him. David says in Psalm 124:8, Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. God knows the way out of your circumstances. He is able to guide you through it. In the previous verse, David compared this to God’s ability to guide a bird through the escape of a fowler’s snare. We just need to trust Him and obey His guidance and we will make it through.

Hope, Love, Trust

The Psalmist gives us a great example of looking in the right direction when we need help; up! Psalm 123:1 says, I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven. When the world seems to be closing in around you, remember to look up to heaven for God’s guidance, leadership, and love.

Believer, Relationship, Worship

There is no greater brother or sister in Christ than the one who chooses to worship and grow in their relationship with God along side you. In Psalm 122:1, the author David says, I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” When we worship God, it can be a chore or it can be fulfilling and even fun. When we worship in community with others and grow closer to God in the process, we are more likely to find delight in worshipping Him. Ultimately, our attitude towards God will determine our attitude in worshipping Him and how we build community with other believers.
