2013 Day 280 – Dave Whitehead – Listening

07 Monday Oct 2013

Today’s reflection post is a commentary on Listening by Dave Whitehead, pastor of Grace Church in New York City, NY

James 1:19-20 – My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

These words of advice will serve those who practice them well. Our tendencies are to listen with the intent of speaking our mind as quickly as possible, but the art of listening can bridge the gap of many misunderstandings. Seek first to understand, then to be understood, and you will do well in the affairs of life.

Compassion, Goodness

Our church has been going through the Fruits of the Spirit these last few weeks. One of the videos we share when we talked about Goodness is about a 9 year old boy who built an elaborate cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store. Through the goodness of a complete stranger, he was able to experience the best day of his life, and in turn, inspire the world. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. 2013 Day 264 – Dave Whitehead: Envy

Envy

Today’s reflection post is a commentary on Envy by Dave Whitehead, pastor of Grace Church in New York City, NY

Proverbs 14:30 – A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Envy may be one of the great sins of our generation. Television and the Internet expose us to the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and, deep in our heart, we want to be like them. How can we tell that we are envious? Look at the deep sense of dissatisfaction that permeates our society. People are not happy because people want more than they have. Our envy has made life rotten to the bones, and the need for repentance in America is as great as ever.

2013 Day 257 – Robert McQuilken – Goodness

Goodness, Love

This past week, our pastor spoke about Goodness as one of the Fruits of the Spirit. He used the attached video of Robert McQuilken, who was the President of Columbia Bible College. After 40 years of marriage he found himself torn between to commitments after his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This is a very touching video that moved me. I hope it is as meaningful to you.

2013 Day 250 – Dr. E.V. Hill’s Wife’s Funeral Part 1

Protection, Trust

Dr. E.V. Hill was the preacher of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist in Los Angeles, CA for almost 42 years. In 1987, after his wife’s prolonged illness, he was given the difficult task of delivering a eulogy for his wife’s funeral. Below are the two videos that make up the sermon he preached. It is one of the most powerful sermons I have ever heard. It talks of trusting God when we don’t understand His will. Three years ago I gave my father’s eulogy and I know how hard it must have been for Dr. Hill to get in front of his congregation and deliver this message. It must have been difficult, but it shows the trust he had in God to deliver him from one of the most difficult moments in his life.

We are going to take the next three days off from reading. We will resume on September 1 with the book of 1 Timothy. In the meantime I will try to post something for our reflection days. I found today’s video interesting. Let me know what you think.

Reflection

I saw this video yesterday and I though I would share it. It features an audio excerpt in the middle by John Piper talking about how nothing we experience in this life is meaningless. Everything we do and experience is meaningful and has purpose. I hope you enjoy it. Tomorrow we will begin reading the book of Ezra.
