2014 Day 236 – Tim Keller: True Happiness

If all we do is seek happiness, we will never really have it. If our number one priority is to serve God, we will get happiness through it. One of the most profound statements in this video is, “Aim at heaven, you get earth through in. Aim at earth, you get neither.” The less we are concerned about happiness and the more we are concerned about Him, the happier we will be.

2014 Day 235 – Psalm 119:133-176

When Christ came to save us from our sin, He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Meaning; God’s commands are still important because they help direct our path, but we are no longer slaves who rely on the Law to save us. Psalm 119:165 says, Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. By using God’s command to help direct our path, we are given clear and safe direction for how we are to exist in this life free from the bondage of sin’s control on our lives.

When we walk through the woods at night it is easier to have a light at our feet to light our path and to keep us from tripping over objects in our way. The same goes for God’s word through the Bible; it leads us and shows us the path through the darkness in this world. Psalm 119:105 says, Your word is a light to my feet and light for my path. When we study God’s word He reveals the right path for us as we live out this life.

It is ironic when we realize how free we are when we are obedient to God. Contrary to what we believe, obeying God does not inhibit us, it frees us to be What God intended us to be. Psalm 119:45 says, I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts. Obedience gives us freedom from guilt and gives God the ability to fulfill His plan for our lives.

2014 Day 232 – Psalm 119:1-44

When we turn our hearts toward God, we gain something far more valuable than earthly treasures, which is the eternal treasures God has promised us. Psalm 119:36 says, Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. When we align our hearts with God’s desires for our life, we may not gain what we think we want, but we will gain everything He ever intended for us, which is far more valuable.

2014 Day 231 – Proverbs 31

Sadly, today is our last day in Proverbs. I think I will somehow try to make proverbs a bigger part of our reading next year. But for today, the passage that stood out to me was Proverbs 31:30, Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. This verse is a good reminder for us all, not just to women. As we age, the things we once thought were so important will no longer matter. The only things that truly matter are those of eternal consequence.

2014 Day 230 – Proverbs 30

I have shared the following passage before, but it always gets my attention. Proverbs 30:8-9 says, Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. All I need in my life is God. This is true for me mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Everything else is a distraction.

There is not much spiritual about this video, but I thought is was really cute. It’s short, but you have to watch to the end… Super special!

2014 Day 228 – Proverbs 29

We should always try to help others find their way. But there comes a time when all guidance and attempts at correction are ignored and we must simply let consequences take their toll. Proverbs 29:1 says, Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. Unfortunately, there comes a time when there is nothing more we can do but give it back to God and trust Him.

2014 Day 227 – Proverbs 28

When the Bible talks about fearing the Lord, it is not talking about a fear that overcomes us to hide and cower, it simply means to revere and honor Him. Proverbs 28:14 says, Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble. It is when we refuse to acknowledge God for who He truly is that we fall into trouble. God deserves our respect, recognition, and honor.
