2014 Day 216 – Proverbs 18

Being in a crowd does not keep us from feeling lonely. We all need people in our lives who give significance to our lives. Proverbs 18:24 says, A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. It is better to have one close friend than to have many superficial acquaintances. More importantly, instead of looking for a true friend, we must first strive to become one.

This video is such a good reminder of what it means to give to others and the eternal impact it has on us. How we treat others, no matter how insignificant it may seem, does mean something either positively or negatively. Let us all intentionally work to be positive influences on those around us.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. – Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was most likely using Proverbs 17:28 as a reference, Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue. Wisdom I need to learn to live by.

Success in anything we do in our lives can be ruined by a loss of control of our temper. Proverbs 16:32 says, Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. Self-control will always be superior to conquest. Losing control can cause you to win the battle, but in the end you may lose the war.

Proverbs 15:18 says, A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. These are words I must continuously remind myself to live by.

You never know what is really behind someone smiling. Sometimes it is nothing more that a cover for a hurting heart. Proverbs 14:13 says, Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. Always be genuine when asking how someone is doing. You never know when their outer expression may be nothing more than a facade for what’s really going on inside.

I have a tendency to react to things before I think them through. There are times when being able to make quick decisions is a good thing, but I must be careful to make decisions based on prudent knowledge and wisdom. Proverbs 13:16 says, Every prudent man acts out of knowledge, but a fool exposes his folly. When we simply bounce from one decision to another without the necessary information to make wise decisions, it eventually catches up to us.

One of the hardest things I struggle with is taking an insult from someone and simply letting it go. Proverbs 12:16 seems to speak directly to me, A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. While it may be a natural reaction to retaliate when wronged, it solves nothing and only encourages more trouble. Answering slowly or not at all are better options to end issues quickly and avoid unnecessary pain.

2014 Day 208 – Francis Chan: Are Your Beliefs Biblical

If we only had the Bible, and no one else’s opinions fed to us, would we still believe what we believe? We owe it to ourselves to dig into the scriptures and learn for ourselves what we need to know about God. Francis Chan’s video clip below may step on some people’s toes, but I think he brings up some very important points about our personal conclusions and beliefs. This is part of the reason why I write this blog everyday; it challenges me to dig into God’s word daily and hear directly from Him.

When true integrity is the guide for our lives, we do the right things instead of allowing our feelings and desires dictate the directions we take. Proverbs 11:3 says, The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. We cannot live two lives; one that is righteous and one that is not. Eventually the conflicting actions of the two will catch up to each other and destroy. Let integrity be your only guide and you will never regret the decisions you make.
