Psalm 96

God, the creator of everything, is worthy of our praise. Psalm 96:4-5 says, 4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 5 For all gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. There is a distinct difference between God and other gods; He is the only true God who created everything. All other gods are idols and excuses who allow people to hide behind their sin. Facing the truth and knowing we are imperfect and have sin in our life is tough, but God loves us. There is nothing that can compare to the love He has for us regardless of our sin.

God is loving and He wants a relationship with each of us, but let us not forget how worthy He is of our praise as our Creator and Lord. Psalm 95:6 says, Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. He is our creator and He created everything around us. Let us never forget the reverence and respect He deserves from us as a loving and perfect Father.

The sooner we realize God’s plan is perfect, the faster stop making plans for ourselves without including God. In Psalm 94:11 the author says, The Lord knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile. Our plans should be whatever God’s plan is for us. When we look to glorify the Lord, we walk away from the futility of our attempts at peace and fulfillment which can only come from God.

As humans it is hard to understand the concept of God being eternal; without beginning or end, but God is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Psalm 93:2 says, Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity. If we can get past the concept of eternity, we see our God who exists through the changes in our world and remains the same. Our comfort should exist in knowing He is not fearful of change, nor is He incapable of working through those changes in the world around us. God is in control and His plan is ultimately perfect.

We should be thankful to God every day, not just when things are good or during times of remembrance like the Thanksgiving Holiday. In the beginning of Psalm 92 it says, 1 It is good to praise the Lord, and make music to your name, O Most High. We can never say thank you enough to God. It should be on the tip of our lips on a constant basis. Praise be to God.

When we trust in our Almighty God, we can rest in the fact that He can carry us through any danger or fear in our lives. In Psalm 91:1 the author says, He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This is a prefect picture of what our trust should look like. When we stay within God’s protection, which can only come from a true relationship with Him, His will deliver us no matter what may come in our path.

Today is my oldest daughter’s birthday; she turns 20 today. I will be 50 this year and my mom turned 87 a couple months backs. Where does the time go? While 20 seems like the just the beginning, time seems to accelerate the older we get. Psalm 90:10 says, The length of our days is seventy years – or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Let us not waste our time here on earth. The span of our life is not guaranteed, so we should make the most of the time we have to impact lives for eternity. We are God’s hands and feet if we truly commit to be used by him. Let us not reach the end of your time here on earth and look back with regret.

God is faithful. We should all be willing to shout it from the mountaintops. In Psalm 89:1 the author says, I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. God’s love for us is limitless and there is no limits to His faithfulness to us. It is our job to make Him known from generation to generation. Our time on earth is limited, so we should use it to make God’s love and faithfulness know.

Today’s reading in Psalm 88, the author is grieved. He is in despair and uses the whole psalm to ask God why He has chosen to not deliver him. Some people may view this type of reaction as a lack of faith, but in actuality it is a show of faith knowing we can call out to God and know He is able to deliver us. When we feel pain from our circumstances God is still there. True faith gives us the freedom to know what God is capable of regardless of whether or not He chooses to deliver us in our timing.

Psalm 87 talks of the city of Zion where we will all gather one day as believers. It is hard to think about a day and a place where we will all be safe in God’s care. For now, we can all rest assured God has a plan and it is perfect. We can find comfort He is using us daily to fulfill His plan. Praise be to God for choosing us.
