2012 Day 350 – Psalm 5, 23

I wish there was more I could add to Psalm 23, but there isn’t. So, here it is:

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 4:8 says, I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord , make me dwell in safety. We feel the greatest amount of peace when we realize our safety comes from The Lord. Peace gives us true rest.

In today’s reading we see the final judgement from each of the seven angels. The one that stood out to me was the seventh angel in verse 17, The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” That last little phrase sounds very familiar. It is just like Christ’s final words on the cross.

I have a simple observation from today’s reading. In verse 2 it says, And I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. They held harps given them by God. Fire represents judgement. In the end, those who stand against evil will stand victorious with God.

We must always remember that our reward is in heaven. Verse 13 says, “Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” This chapter shows the saints enduring tremendous persecution and suffering, but they knew they were living for God’s glory and not their own. Their suffering and labor was relieved when they found rest in heaven. We tend to get hung up on finding the easy life here on earth. The truth is it doesn’t exist. We will find rest in our promised reward when we go to be with The Lord eternally in heaven. Until then, remember it is all for His glory!

Verses 9-10 stood out to me this morning, 9 He who has an ear, let him hear. 10 If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. The last part refers to our patience and faithfulness when it comes to God’s timing. Even today, when we feel alone, we need to wait on God for His perfect will and timing to deliver us. God is always with us.

Once again I do not have a lot to offer in this chapter. But I do want to make an observation. There is a lot of the book of Revelation that parallels information in the book of Daniel. Like the book of Daniel, the angel Michael’s responsibility is to protect God’s people. If you ever feel like there is a supernatural protector around you, it’s because there is. Never underestimate the power of the unseen world. I don’t say this to be controversial, I say it because its true. God has placed us on this earth to fulfill His perfect will. There are angels who help and protect us because the opposite exists as well.

While I do not have a key verse that jumped out at me from today’s reading, there was a message that resonated with me. God will ultimately punish the wicked when the time is right and when it fits within His purpose and will. On the other side, the obedient will ultimately be rewarded, but probably not in this lifetime. If that we’re the case, the righteous would all be rich and disease free. God wants obedience from His children and for us to have faith that our reward belongs in eternity and not necessarily in this lifetime. We are to trust that God is in control through all circumstances and will act to fulfill His perfect plan for His glory and honor. This is not selfishness on His part, it is His right. To think differently is arrogance on our part.

When the end of days finally comes all prophesy will be revealed. Verse 7 says, But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets. We need not worry about when all prophesy is fulfilled, we simply need to trust in God that He will provide us with all the answers when the time is right. All prophesy is for His glory, not ours.

Verses 20 and 21 of today’s reading are astonishing to me, 20 The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood–idols that cannot see or hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. Even after all the suffering they experience around them they still do not repent of their sins. How often am I like this with God? Maybe not to the same extent, but I see suffering all around me and yet I still find ways to go my own way and disobey God. I must constantly remind myself that God is the only one I need to listen to and obey no matter what the distractions are around me.
