2012 Day 330 – 2 John 1

We’ve heard it before; Love is an action, not a verb. Verse 6 clearly supports that notion, And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. Whether we look at the Old or New Testament, we are commanded to love. In the Old, in the second part of Leviticus 19:18 it says …but love your neighbor as yourself. And in the New, Christ commands us in John 15:12, My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Love is put into practice when we are obedient to His commands. We can do this in a variety of ways; accepting people, listening, helping, giving, serving, refusing to judge, and a variety of other positive ways. In the end, it comes down to just doing and not just talking!

Verses 14-15 are an interesting set of verses, 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him. Notice that the emphasis is on “His will”, not on ours. We should never approach God with the demands we have of Him, but rather we should discuss plans He has for us. If we align our prayers and requests to His will, He will listen to us, which allows us to approach Him with confidence.

In today’s reading the simplest verse is the most powerful to me. Verse 19 simply says We love because he first loved us. Without knowing God’s love, we would never know what true love actually looks like. Thank you Lord for being the perfect example of how we should love others and what it looks like to be truly loved.

I love verse 1 of this chapter, How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Bottom line; it is not our job to make the world know God. We are to be a reflection of who God is, but ultimately, the world will know who God is according to His perfect plan.

The things this world has to offer will last the equivalent of a blink of an eye in the light of eternity. When we line up our desires with the desires of God, we are given the peace to know it will last the test of time and have an impact on God’s eternal kingdom. Verse 17 says, The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. Nothing will bless our lives more than to do the will of God because we know it will last. We simple need to align ourselves with God’s plan for His kingdom and we will be blessed. It’s hard to do, but has the ability to give us eternal fulfillment if we just stay faithful to Him.

Why do we bother to try to look better than what we are? We are all sinners. We all need God’s grace. None of us are able to have fellowship with God without His mercy and grace through Christ’s sacrifice. 1 John 1:10 says, If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. It is not a shameful thing to know we need God. He created us to need Him and to have fellowship with Him. We must embrace His love and desire to have a relationship with us because He loves us.

2012 Day 324 – Psalm 39, 73

There was so much wisdom in today’s reading in Psalm. The verses that stood out to me the most was Psalm 73:25-26, 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Who do we have to take care of us besides God? We love and trust friends and family around us, but in the end the only one who is guaranteed to be there for us is God. We really can not even rely on ourselves because we are imperfect. We can only trust God for perfect wisdom and guidance in our lives. We must trust in Him and know His plan is perfect.

2012 Day 323 – Jude 1

Today we are reading the single chapter book of Jude which was a letter written by Jude who was the brother of Jesus. The purpose of this letter was to remind the early church to stay vigilant against the prolific heresy of that day and to keep a pure faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The book is summed up by the last two verses of the book, 24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy– 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Jesus deserves all the glory through all the good and bad that may happen to us. He never leaves His throne no matter what is happening because He is ultimately in control and our faith should reflect that no matter what happens to us.

2012 Day 322 – Psalm 20, 120

What do we put our trust in? Psalm 20:7 says, Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. We do not need to trust in anything other that God. He takes care of us in all we do.

There is not a lot I have to say about today’s reading. The verse that stood out to me the most was Psalm 7:17, I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. No matter how much things may seem out of control, God is still on the throne and has it all under control because He is the Lord Most High.
