2016 Day 358 – Psalm 49

Our lives are limited and not eternal by nature. It it through the sacrifice of Christ that we are granted eternal life. Psalm 49:8-9 says, 8 The ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough – 9 that he should live on forever and not see decay. Back in the days of this Psalm, slaves could only be set free by being redeemed or ransomed (someone paying the price); it was a costly endeavor. But through Christ, He paid the price and set each of us free if we simply accept His gift of eternal salvation.

God never leave us and He always stands by our side in all circumstances. Psalm 48:14 says, For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. It may feel as though we are alone at times, but by faith God will guide us if we are open to His leading in our lives.

God deserves our praise in all things, both good and bad.  Psalm 47:1 says, Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. This Psalm was written during the Assyrian invasion of Judah, but the author of this Psalm still encouraged the people to praise God. Regardless of the circumstance, God deserves our praise.

While fear is a natural emotion, we can rest assured we are never alone when we have a relationship with God. Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. God is always present whether we feel His presence or not. Trust in Him and know He never leaves us and is always by our side.

God is the one who moves us to be exactly who He created us to be. When we are in sync with Him, we do things we never thought we were capable of doing. In Psalm 45:1 the author says, My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. We are the instrument used by our Holy Father to do His will and impact this world if we are willing to submit to His leading.

Our confidence should come from the knowledge that we serve a powerful and loving God. Psalm 44:8 says, In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Because of our confidence, we should give God our praise at all times. All that we do and all God does for us is for His glory.

It is not always easy to do the right thing. But when we do what is right, we are justified from fallout. In Psalm 43:1 the psalmist says, Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; rescue me from deceitful and wicked men. God’s acceptance of our actions is all the justification we need.

2016 Day 350 – Psalm 42

The poetry of Psalm 42:1 is beautiful, As a deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. David recognized water was a necessity for life. He also recognized that God is just as important as water in our lives. We must all crave God and a relationship with Him as much as we crave anything that gives us life.

The Bible is filled with God’s concern for the poor, weak, and helpless. God wants us to share His concern. In Psalm 41:1 David begins with, Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble. As God has blessed every one of us, we should in turn bless others. Our generosity should reflect God’s generosity for us in all aspects of our lives, but especially when it comes to giving.
