2012 Day 230 – Acts 24

Paul continues to show courage and faithfulness where ever he goes. In this chapter, even while he is being accused by the Jews in front of Governor Felix, Paul is not deterred even to the point where it turns a bit personal to the Governor and makes Felix a bit uncomfortable and afraid. Most people are ok with discussing the gospel as long as it doesn’t touch them personally. The reality is the gospel is very personal. It’s about a personal relationship with Christ. Unless someone is touched by God in a way that changes them in a deep and personal way, it is just religion and ritual following of the rules and the law.

In today’s reading, we see how God works when He has work for us to do. Paul went from being a prisoner to having his own Centurion bodyguards. When God’s plan is being fulfilled, there is nothing He won’t do to make it happen. I tend to worry about the silly things in life, but God is so much more capable of getting things done than we allow Him to do.

There were no specific verses that stood out to me today, but the overall story reminded me of something important. When Paul was standing before the Jews, he had their attention because he was able to tell them the story of how he was saved. It is a compelling story that they could relate to as Jews. However, Paul took it a step further and said God called him to reach out to the Gentiles, which exposed their pride, and caused their anger to flare. The thing that stood out to me is how easy it is to tell the loving and easy part of the gospel, but God has called us to be bold. It’s not always easy to tell someone that their life will end in death if they don’t accept God’s mercy and grace, because they have to admit they actually need it. We have to be bold to share the whole gospel with everyone because this is what God has called us to do.

I always admire Paul’s boldness when it comes to his willingness to serve Christ at any cost. Verse 13 shows that even though he was warned by the prophet Agabus, he would not be dissuaded from going to Jerusalem, Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Some may look at Paul’s actions as reckless, but the reality is that Paul was willing to lay down his life to reach people with the Gospel of Christ. There are days I won’t even risk my reputation, much less my life. I hope and pray I’d have the courage of Paul if God ever called me to stand up for Him in the same way.

2012 Day 226 – Psalm 115, 135

Psalm 115:1 stood out to me this morning, Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Before I pray and ask God for anything, I need to ask myself, “If God answers my prayer, who will get the glory?” I need to always strive to give God the glory for everything that is good in my life. Without His many blessings my life would be empty.

In a relationship, you either tend to be aligned in your values and moral, or you at least respect them. In our relationship with God, we must be aligned with Him when it comes to how we feel about evil. In Psalm 98:10 it says, Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. If we love God, then we will hate evil; even, and especially, the evil that exists in us. We all strive for a righteous and pure heart, but we are imperfect beings who need God’s grace to make us righteous. So, when our imperfection appears in our lives, we should feel pain when from its existence because of how far we are from the righteousness of God. Praise God for His mercy and grace in forgiving us and allowing us to be pure in His sight.

God is able to turn bad situations into good for our lives. Psalm 60:5 promises us that God is able to save those He loves, Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. It is not always the way we want delivery, but He knows what is best for us. We must have faith and trust in Him to know what is best for us.

2012 Day 223 – Psalm 2, 29

In today’s reading Psalm 2:8 stood out to me, Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. All we really have to do is ask of God and He will bless us. It’s not always the way we think He will bless, but it is always within His perfect plan that allows us to look back and know how much He wants to take care of us.

2012 Day 222 – Romans 16

Verses 17 and 18 stood out to me today, 17 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. This is why it is so important to spend your own time in God’s word, so that you know the accuracy of what you are being taught from sermons and books. If we rely solely on a person’s opinion, without checking the validity of their teaching, we risk the potential for being misled into inaccurate information.

From now on when someone asks me why we do this blog I’m going to point them to Romans 15:4, For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. The knowledge of scripture and understanding the history behind it affects our attitude toward our present and future. The more we know and understand about what God has done in the past, the more confidence we will have in what He will do about our future. Being diligent about reading God’s word increases our trust in God’s perfect plan and will for our lives.
