2016 Day 298 – Proverbs 28

A Leader’s job is meant to inspire and drive execution; it is not about driving people to exasperation and exhaustion. Proverbs 28:3 gives a great example of what a leader is not supposed to do: A rule who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops. While this verse refers to a ruler, it applies to leadership as well. If we drive people to the point of oppression, there will be nothing left. We will not get results and we will lose people in the process. Leadership is about pulling people through tough circumstances, not pushing them into impossible expectations.

There is strength that comes from being around good people. Proverbs 27:17 says, As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Healthy challenge and encouragement from like-minded people can be more valuable than vast amounts of knowledge. Look for people to surround  you who can pour strength and wisdom into your life.

Every time I read Proverbs 26:11, it is meaningful to me, As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. Once you have learned a hard lesson, don’t be a fool and repeat the same mistake. Accept God’s mercy and grace, then move on and don’t come back.

It is hard to recover from unrighteousness. Proverbs  25:26 says, Like a muddied spring or polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked. Once you give into evil, it is hard to clear your life from its affects. But through grace and mercy, Christ can cleanse us and bring us back to righteousness.

It is hard to be on the “go” all the time. We all want to be able to coast every once in a while. But resting for too long can be detrimental to your future. God calls us to be diligent in all we do. Proverbs 24:33-34 says, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of hands to rest – 34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. If we take it easy for too long, it will ultimately cost us everything.
In the same vein, if we feel it is OK to cut corners, instead of doing what is right all the time, it will eventually cause us to accept mediocrity in all we do. Stay diligent and continuously look to the Holy Spirit for leading and guidance.

2016 Day 292 – Proverbs 23

We can spend all our time and energy chasing down riches, but in the end we will have done nothing but pursued something we cannot take with us into eternity. Proverbs 23:5 says: Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. The hard thing about riches is we can never have enough. The more we have, the more we want. It is a vicious cycle. Let us spend out time and energy working towards the things that impact our lives eternally. They may be more difficult to attain, but will have everlasting consequences and bring glory to God.

The job of a parent is not to make all decisions for their children, it is to raise them to make good decisions for themselves. Proverbs 22:6 says: Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Raising children is more about leading and less about dictating them. If we do a good job leading them, they will remember the right and good paths throughout their lives.

Diligence is not something that comes naturally to anyone, it is a result of deliberate development of a strong character. Proverbs 21:5 says: The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. By working hard with methodical patience, we can profit from it; just as the opposite will lead to poverty. Those who wait around for everything to just fall in their laps will be sadly disappointed when nothing happens.

While I do not have issues with drinking alcoholic beverages, it should not be consumed as a means of controlling our behavior. Proverbs 20:1 says: Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Anything you allow in your life to control you is bad, no matter what it is. The only thing we can ever allow in our lives to control us is the Holy Spirit, who will never lead us down the wrong path.
