2016 Day 247 – Hebrews 13

As a reminder of God’s faithfulness, Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 31:6 in Hebrews 13:5b “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God is not only there for us on occasion or just when we need Him, He is there for us always. God’s promise was true yesterday, today, and always.

In today’s reading, Paul reminds us of the “great cloud of witnesses”, which are those who have come before us and paved the way of obedience. Hebrews 12:1 says: Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. The men and women listed in Hebrews 11 were faithful because they were able to shed the things that held them back and/or pushed them away from their relationship with God. When we remove the distraction of this world, we are able to follow God’s will for our lives more easily. Let us remove the distractions and focus on God’s plan for our lives instead.

Today we read Hebrews 11, also known as the “Faith Chapter”. One of the examples of faith from today’s reading that stood out to me is Hebrews 11:4, But faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. The reason this passage stood out to me is because even though Abel did the right thing, he still died for it. Too many people complain about how unfair this life can be, but if God can use the bad to show the good, is it not worth it? By Abel’s death we still speak of his righteousness and see a wonderful example of faith. If bad things in our life can show others the good, then maybe it is all part of God’s plan.

We can have ultimate confidence in the power of God. There is nothing God cannot do. In Hebrews 10:23 Paul says: Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. More importantly than God’s power, which is unquestionable, is God’s faithfulness. While we may not always see where God’s will is taking us, we can rest assured God’s plan is perfect. In the end, we will be with Him and there is nothing sweeter than knowing this truth.

Because of Christ’s sacrifice we are free. Paul says in Hebrews 9:14, How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our conscience from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! What we must remember is the last passage in this verse where is says we are free from sin that we may serve the living God. Freedom from sin gives us the freedom to serve.

Why do we hang onto our attempts at righteousness through our own efforts? Christ died on the cross to make our own efforts towards righteousness obsolete. In Hebrews 8:13 Paul says: By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear. Since Christ died on the cross for our sins we no longer have to strive for perfection through our own works because Christ has made us perfect in God’s eyes through His sacrifice on the cross for us.

We are wasting our time when we look for fulfillment from anything other than a life with Christ. According to  Hebrews 7:26 He fills all our needs:  Such a high priest meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. What more should we look for? Nothing.

Doing the right thing can sometimes feel very lonely. Paul says in Hebrews 6:10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. When we do the right thing, we always have an audience and when the audience is God, it’s the only one we need.

If we never grow up, we will never be able to fend for ourselves.  The same goes for our spiritual growth. Hebrews 5:14 says, But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. The more mature we grow spiritually, the more we can distinguish the difference between right and wrong. When we are young we make simple mistakes, but as we grow older, we should not be making the same silly mistakes we made in our youth.
