2016 Day 237 – Hebrews 4

We all need help sometimes and we all need grace when we fail. While many people around us are incapable of granting grace, God’s grace is unlimited. Hebrews 4:16 says: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. When we come into the presence of God, He has already forgiven us. He loves us and wants an authentic relationship with us that can only be possible through forgiveness because of the blood of Christ. Let us never take that for granted.

2016 Day 236 – Hebrews 3

When I first read the Bible all the way through a few years back, the biggest thing that struck me was the fact that there are no perfect people in the Bible; at least not until we reach Jesus. Every single character sinned and was saved by the redeeming blood of Christ. And, every single character’s purpose was to ultimately point everyone back to Christ. Hebrews 3:3 give a wonderful analogy of this: Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater than the house itself. No matter how great the individual is, we were all created to be a reflection of Christ and to point others to Him, without exception.

God is more capable of understanding what we are go through than we can ever imagine. Christ experienced what we experienced when He was on earth and in some cases even more. In Hebrews 2:18 Paul says, Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. We must trust that He is able to empathize with us and stand with us in our temptation.

2016 Day 233 – Hebrews 1

Today we begin the book of Hebrews. This book was written by Paul and was meant to present the superiority of Christ to the Hebrew people. Paul starts the book by comparing Christ to the angels and showing His superiority to them. Paul quotes numerous Old Testament scriptures in this first chapter to point to the coming of Jesus Christ the Messiah and why He was the only true Son of God. Paul begins  by quoting Psalm 2:7 in Hebrew 1:5 where he says For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become you Father.” All of the passages quoted by Paul in this first chapter make a very clear case for Christ’s superiority. Through faith we can see the truth and believe.

No matter what is going on in your life, never forget God loves you more than anything. When we feel the weight of the world on our backs, we must remember God is there to help carry the burden. 1 Peter 5:7 says: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. It is a wonderful feeling when we realize we are not alone and even more amazing when He delivers.

We all get so hung up on the trivial things and we get distracted and focus on the wrong things. But Peter, one of the original disciples, reminds us of what Chris was really like and what He valued most. In 1 Peter 4:8 he says: Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. When we love, and when we are loved, very little else matters. The power of our faith comes from loving others, not from judging them. It is a simply, yet powerful command.

Peter gives us a great reminder about fear in 1 Peter 3:13, Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? While fear can have an impact on how and who we serve, it shouldn’t. God is in control and is able to protect us in any situation. When we trust in God for everything, even when it is our time to leave this earth to be with Him, we can live in peace and just enjoy the ride.

Before Christ came into our lives, we were both literally and figuratively lost. 1 Peter 2:25 says, For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Through Christ’s sacrifice for each of us on the cross, we were given a path to righteousness. This righteousness matters to God more than it matters to people around us; always keep this in mind when we are tempted to boast.

God sets the standard for morality. It does not come from the majority of people. In 1 Peter 1:16 we are reminded of this, For it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” If we needed a reason to be holy, this is it. We are to be a reflection of God. We will never be perfect, but because we are forgiven, our righteousness should give us the desire and ability to be a reflection of our perfect savior and Lord to the best of our ability.
