2016 Day 226 – Titus 3

At the end of this letter to Titus, Paul give some final instructions starting with Titus 3:1-2, 1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready  to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. Our obedience to God comes first, but after that we are to be subject to those in authority over us. We may not agree with them, but we are obligated by God to obey. More importantly, Paul also reminds us to be Christ-like and to love others and show consideration to all. We are to be a reflection of Christ.

Truth is not based on emotion. We can all get caught up in the emotions of a moment and feel strongly it is based on truth. But emotions can lead us to inaccurate beliefs. In Titus 2:1 Paul says, You must teach what is according with sound doctrine. Sound doctrine comes from the Bible and the Holy Spirit living in us to help us interpret was is true. While church leaders are there to help guide us, it is up to each of us to listen to the God through the Holy Spirit revealing truth to us.

Today we begin Paul’s letter to Titus who was one of the church leaders on the island of Crete. The purpose of this letter was to advise Titus of his responsibilities and to teach him. In Titus 1:15 Paul warns Titus of people whose lives are so corrupt they cannot see the truth: To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupt. These people are unable to see the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, they attempt to justify their behavior and make good people out to be the ones who are wrong. If we look around, and are honest with ourselves, we see these people all around us today in our current world. Be aware of them and do not allow them to persuade you that you are doing something wrong in your righteousness.

When I was in college I had a great friend who I would see on almost a daily basis. Each time we saw each other we would ask two questions: 1) Are you happy? The answer could be yes or no depending on how the day was going. 2) Are you content? The answer always had to be YES, because we wanted to remind each other that our contentment comes from knowing Christ is Lord of our live and therefore in control. In 1 Timothy 6:6-7 Paul reminds Timothy of the same idea:  But Godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. All we have and all we are ultimately comes from God. Happiness can almost seem like a luxury because we live in a fallen world. This world gives us plenty of opportunity to question ourselves and our worth. But when we look to God we see love and our true worth in the light of eternity.

In the world we live in today, sin can be easily disguised. It is often getting harder to tell good from evil. In 1 Timothy 5:24-25 Paul warns Timothy with: 24 The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgement ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden. But when we talk about the good things, those are much harder to hide, even when attention is not given directly to it. When you do good, people know it. There is very little need to bring attention to good deeds.

There are many things we choose to invest time in doing, but we should invest most of our time in what matters for eternity. In 1 Timothy 4:8 Paul says to Timothy, For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. While physical well-being is important, we should spend most of out time working on things that have an impact towards God’s eternal kingdom. These bodies will one day fail, but our Spirit will live on forever.

When serving the church we must first serve those closest to us. If we cannot serve our family well, then how can we be expected to serve the church? In 1 Timothy 3:5 Paul says, If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church? The church is an extension of our family. If we neglect our immediate family to serve the church, then we have ultimately failed.

Before Christ came and died on the cross for our sins, men were not allowed to go directly to God, they had to go to a High Priest who would then intercede for them. This all changed after Christ. In 1 Timothy 2:5 Paul explains, For there is one God and one mediator between God and me, the man Christ Jesus. Christ became the real-time mediator for us with God. He covered our sins to allow us to be in God’s presence. Without Christ we would still be slaves to the law. But through Christ the law was fulfilled and he covers us. Praise Him for our gift of eternity and the ability to have a true relationship with God..
