2016 Day 166 – 2 Corinthians 6

God calls us to love the world and be a reflection of His love, but He does not call us to be a part of the world. In 2 Corinthians 6:15 Paul says, What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? Belial is the name Paul give to Satan. When we are a part of God’s kingdom and have experienced His light, we can not mix with the darkness of this world. This does not mean we cannot bring others to a loving relationship with God, but we no longer have anything in common with a fallen world.

God does not need us, but He chooses to use us in the fulfillment of His perfect plan and to share His love with the world around us. In 2 Corinthians 5:20 Paul says, We are therefore Christ’s  ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. Just as an ambassador in a foreign land represents the United States and it’s interests, so are we ambassadors of God in this fallen world. Where we belong and who we belong to does not change, but we live here as representatives of Christ.

Paul reminds us today we may feel like we have reached the end of our rope, but we are never done because God is with us always. In 2 Corinthians 4:8 Paul says, We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We may be weak, but God chooses to use us anyway by displaying His power through us if we just believe. God will be glorified as long as we are willing to be used by Him.

Before Christ, there was a veil which separated the people from the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle of the Temple  because only God was perfect enough to be there. Paul explains what changed when Christ came to provide redemption for sin in 2 Corinthians 3:16, But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Christ’s perfect sacrifice for all our sins removed the veil that separates us from God. Because of Christ we are no longer separated from God and we have direct access to Him.

Because we are saved through Christ, 2 Corinthians 2:15 says we have the aroma of ChristFor we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. There is a distinct contrast in the aroma of something fully alive and something dying. Weather it is fruit, vegetables, plants, or animals, you can smell the freshness or lack thereof. It is the same difference in the aroma we are to God when we are saved and active believers through Christ.

When Christ’s followers suffer, so does He. We will probably suffer as followers of Christ throughout our lives, but Christ never leaves us alone in our suffering. In 2 Corinthians 2:5 Paul says, For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. The second part of the verse is where our hope is. Our comfort comes from Christ who experiences the suffering with us. We were never promised a perfect life, but we were promised to never have to experience it alone.

In today’s reading I love Paul’s simple command in 1 Corinthians 16:14, Do everything in love. If we focused on love as we serve the Kingdom of God, we can’t mess it up.

We are to influence this world and not be influenced by it. In 1 Corinthians 15:33 Paul says, Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” We are called to be in this world doing the will of God. However, we should be aware this world has the ability to impact and change us. Do not be deceived into thinking you can not be changed. If you are not constantly being influenced by good things, the bad will find a way.
