2016 Day 6 – Luke 5

Obedience is sometimes hard, especially when you have tried and failed on your own a few times. Luke 5:5 shows what happens when we are obedient to God’s calling, Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” The result was more than Simon could ever have hoped for. When God calls us to something, and we obey, the payoff in the end is always better than we can imagine.

2016 Day 5 – Luke 4

In today’s reading we look at Luke’s account of Jesus being tempted by Satan for 40 days and nights while he fasted. At the end of this time, even though He was weak and hungry, Jesus rebuked the devil for trying to tempt Him. The most powerful verse for me is Luke 4:12, Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” Two things happened here: 1) Jesus exclaimed His true identity as God’s Holy Son. 2) Jesus put the devil in his place and showed His authority over all things, including the devil. When we face temptation or struggles around us, remember who is our authority and who has all control.

When Jesus was on the earth, even He was tempted by Satan. But even Jesus came to a point where He had enough. Matthew 4:10 says, Jesus said to him, “Away from me Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord you God, and serve him only.'” We will never stop being tempted, but we have the same power to move Satan aside in God’s holy name.

John the Baptist was the perfect messenger. In Luke 3:9 he made it clear what the people need to know, The ax is already at the root of the tree, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Even today, though we know Christ has already come, we must produce fruit if we are to be called followers of Christ. A tree that does not produce fruit is good for nothing but firewood.

It is sometimes difficult to remember that Jesus was both the Son of God and God. It is a difficult concept to understand the trinity, but the important thing to remember is that God the Father was proud of God His Son. After Jesus was baptized, God responded in Matthew 3:17, And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. God the Father not only showed pleasure and support for His Son, He also showed that He owned the relationship. As a reflection of Christ, we should be striving for God’s pleasure in us as well.

When we lift our eyes to the Lord in prayer, we can rest assured we are in the safety of Gods hands. David writes in Psalm 28:2, Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place. We know we are reaching the Most High when we pray to God. There is no where else higher we could possibly go.

2015 Day 364 – Psalm 54

God wants us to be honest with Him about our true feelings and needs. In today’s reading, David is not afraid to go from prayer to praise. His feelings are transparent throughout the Psalm. Psalm 54:4 says, Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. Ultimately, David knew God was all he needed. If we let Him, God can be our helper, protector, and friend.

How we may feel about our relationship with God, does not translate to the way God feels about our relationship with Him. In Psalm 31:22 even David shows surprise that God never stop listening to our cries for help even when we may not feel close to Him, In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. He will never stop listening for us.

Today we read about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry according to the Gospel of John. The beauty of Jesus coming to save of is the story each of us share as adopted Children of God. John 1:12 says, Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in  his name, he gave the right to become children of God. As adopted children we all share the same benefits. We are God’s children and we all receive the same inheritance of eternal life with Him.
