2015 Day 281 – Proverbs 14

Fearing God is not a bad thing. It is respect and reverence for our creator and Father in Heaven. The fear of God is no different than the fear we had of our parents when we were little kids. While we did not always understand the rules, we followed them anyway because we knew they were meant to keep us safe. Proverbs 14:2 He whose walk is upright fears the Lord, but he whose ways are devious despises him. God wants obedience, but more importantly He wants us to be fulfilled in a way we can only find through walking with Him.

Living a life of righteousness helps guard our lives. Proverbs 13:6 says, Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. Every choice we make for good brings us closer to God. While every choice for evil does the exact opposite. Right decisions are a reflection of our integrity and brings us security and safety from evil.

I am guilty more than most of speaking what is on my mind before fully thinking through the consequences. Proverbs 12:18 says, Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. I need to be more careful of the way I express my thoughts and feelings. While my feelings my be valid, my verbalization of those feels may bring more harm than good. My words should heal, not hurt, and I am responsible for the consequences either way.

We never know when someone needs a few simple words to help them keep going. Proverbs 11:25 says,  A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. There are few things in life more satisfying than watching someone being lifted up by someone who believes in them. Let us all strive to be encouragers of each other.

When God blesses us, He brings true wealth. This type of wealth is not measured in zeros and multiple commas, but by our ability to live our own lives and in the process help others. Proverbs 10:22 says, The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. Unlike wealth brought for personal gain, wealth is a blessing when we use it to further God’s blessings on others.

Wisdom is not knowledge and it is not something we are born with either. Wisdom comes from experiences we learn directly and from observing others. The key is to learn and apply wisdom to make better choices. Proverbs 9:12 says, If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. We have the ability in life to gain wisdom or to choose something else. God gives us the ability to gain wisdom through experiences and through the Holy Spirit in us. We just have to apply it.

When we seek God first in everything we do we find His favor in our lives. He may not give us everything we want when we want it, but we can rest assured we are following His will for our lives. Proverbs 8:35-36 says, 35 For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. 36 But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death. Very little good can come from a life of selfish ambition. We may succeed at life, but ultimately we will miss the mark for things that ultimately matter in the light of eternity.

God is not unclear about what we must do to keep His commands; keep His words close to our heart and obediently follow them. Proverbs 7:1 says, My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. There is only one way to do this and it is to be in God’s word and apply it to our lives. We must constantly turn to God and remind ourselves of what it means to be righteous. We will often fail, but God does not expect perfection, He expects effort and trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us to be obedient.

We cannot play with temptation and expect to avoid sin indefinitely. Just like playing with fire we will eventually get burned. Proverbs 6:27 says, Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? If we avoid the temptation of sin, we avoid sin altogether. Let us not kid ourselves into thinking we are able to be around temptation and not sin. The best prevention against sinning is to avoid the temptation surrounding it.
