2015 Day 241 – Hebrews 8

The original covenant God had made with Abraham and later fully articulated with Moses and Aaron, was meant to be temporary. It was not perfect and required a lot of intervention from the High Priest. Hebrews 8:7 says, For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. Jesus fixed it by becoming the perfect High Priest for us. When we have faith in Him, He automatically intercedes on our behalf. The new covenant is perfect.

Jesus is our advocate. Hebrews 7:25 says, Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Jesus intercedes for us to God, just as the Old Testament High Priest interceded for the Israelites. The assurance that Christ is there on our behalf, frees us from guilt and fear of failure in God’s eyes.

While we are not saved by our deeds, our conduct is an evidence of our faith. Hebrews 6:7 says, Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. Just like land that produces a good crop receives loving care from a farmer, we too receive care and attention from our Father in heaven when we are productive in our faith.

As infant children mature, they move from milk to solid food. As believers, we do the same thing with the Word of God. In Hebrews 5:13 it says, Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. Unless we mature in our relationship with Christ, we will never fully grow into who God purposed us to be and we will never understand true righteousness.

The Word of God is more than just a collection of words forming a book called the Bible. It is a living and active, life changing work that is capable of changing us. Hebrews 4:12 says, For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. God’s Word penetrates to reveal who we are and who we are not. It reveals the core of our moral and spiritual reality. The Word of God is not just meant to be read and remembered, it requires action on our parts to allow it to shape our lives.

Sin is a liar; it tells us what feels good is OK. It never tells us about the consequences and the lasting impact it has on our lives. Hebrews 3:13 says, But be courageous one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. If we are courageous to go away from the call of sin in our lives and stop listening to the lie, we can conquer sin. More importantly, we will not be deceived by it and the belief that it does not have long lasting affects on our lives and the lives of people around us.

2015 Day 234 – Hebrews 2

Jesus is relevant today and always because he lived as we did and He suffered for us because He loved us. Hebrews 2:9 says, But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Jesus is God and yet He allowed himself to be placed on earth, lower than the angels, so He could take our place in death for our eternal salvation.

2015 Day 233 – Hebrews 1

Today we begin the book of Hebrews. There is no clear indication of who wrote the book, but possible authors have been Paul, Luke, Barnabas, Apollos, Silas, Philip, Priscilla and others. The purpose of the book is to present the sufficiency and authority of Christ. The book is a letter written to Hebrew Christians who may have been considering a return to Judaism, most likely because of a lack of understanding in Biblical truths leading up to Christ. One of the key verses in the entire book is Hebrews 1:3, The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty in heaven.

Life is often overwhelming and sometimes hard to know how we will make it through. In 1 Peter 5:7 Peter says, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for for you. God loves us so much that he wants us to place our burdens in His care. He did this with our sins when He died on the cross and He wants to do it now with the things that stress us out and worry us. Trust God and He will comfort us and provide us peace.
