2015 Day 220 – 1 Timothy 4

Having a pure life requires constant care. In 1 Timothy 4:16 Paul warns Timothy, Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. We must be constantly on guard to watch against sin that can ultimately destroy us. We must also watch what we believe just as carefully and not allow society to dictate what is right versus wrong. When we look to God as our compass, He will never lead us down the wrong path.

In today’s reading, Paul talks about church leadership and what is required. The first verse sums it all up in 1 Timothy 3:1, Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Church (people, not the building) leadership is a big responsibility because we serve as God’s representative. It is not a popularity contest. It requires strength of character, integrity, and most of all, a commitment to love others and serve God wholeheartedly.

One of the hardest things in the world is to pray when you are angry, not to mention the fact that God is displeased with us when we are angry. In 1 Timothy 2:8 Paul’s words to Timothy are, I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. Even Jesus said that we should interrupt our prayers to make peace with others in Matthew 5:23-24. The goal is to have a good relationship with Him and others.

Today we begin 1 Timothy, which is the first letter Paul wrote to Timothy. The letter is meant as an encouragement and Paul is blunt about needing Christ’s presence in his life just as much as anyone. In 1 Timothy 1:15 Paul says, Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst. None of us is without sin. Even in our best of days, we are not sinless. Christ died for us because we cannot do it without Him. Praise God He did.

Life is hard! And sometimes it’s just difficult to be happy about the difficulties of life. But in Philippians 4:4 Paul is clear about how we are to handle the difficulties of this life, Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! This is easier said that done, but God’s commands are clear and He is the one who gives us the strength to rejoice if we simply trust in Him. We are never alone. God is always by our side.

Do you ever look back on your life and wonder what you have really accomplished? I know we have accomplished a lot in each of our lives, but how much of it was spent accomplishing things that really matter? In Philippians 3:8 Paul explains how he feels about his past accomplishments. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ. Unless we accomplish things that matter for the Kingdom, it will never truly satisfy us.

2015 Day 213 – Philippians 2

Doing the right thing is not always easy and most of the time it is thankless and lacks recognition from others for the effort. But in Philippians 2:14 Paul calls us to Do everything without complaining or arguing. Christ, once again, is our perfect example of this. In all the suffering and pain He ultimately experienced, He never complained. Nothing we experience in this life can compare to the suffering Christ experienced and we should be able to follow Paul’s instruction to do everything without complaining or arguing, with no exception.

Today we begin the book of Philippians, which is a letter to the believers in Philippi, a city which sat on an important transportation route in Macedonia. Once again, we see where Paul invested time with believers and the importance of their location to the spread of the gospel. In this first chapter we also read one of the most powerful passages from Paul in Philippians 1:21, For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. The point Paul is making is as long as we are living our lives for Christ, we win. Even if it leads to death, we still live.
