2015 Day 191 – Romans 14

No matter what we do, we do it for God and His glory. In Romans 14:8 Paul says, If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. No matter how hard or easy life may be for us, we should do all things with glorifying God in mind and bringing people closer to Him.

If we spend all our time trying to be more like Jesus, there is little time to think about much of anything else. In Romans 13:14 Paul says, Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. This is easier said than done, and we will not be perfect at it, but if we don’t try then we are destined to fail.

It is so easy to fall into the temptation of getting back at someone after they have hurt us. We all fight the desire to give them a taste of their own pain. But this is not what Jesus did and it is not what Paul calls us to do. In Romans 12:17 Paul says, Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. We are a reflection of Christ, and even though humanity’s sin is what ultimately caused Him to die on the cross for our sins, He still willingly suffered and died for all of us. Jesus is our example and He calls us to love everyone regardless of who they are and/or what they have done.

God owes us nothing. In the grand scheme of things, we have done nothing that requires God’s repayment to us. In the doxology at the end of this chapter, in Romans 11:35, Paul says, “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” God has given to us even when we did not deserved it. When we question God for not giving us our own selfish desires, we should be thankful instead for all He has given. If God had given us nothing more than salvation from eternal death through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, it should have been enough. Anything else we desire says more about us than it will ever say about God.

I love the quote Paul makes in Romans 10:15, “How beatiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” We are blessed to be called by God as His servant in bringing the good news of salvation to those who do not believe.

God’s mercy, along with His plan and will, are perfect. When He decides to have mercy it is for His purpose and for His glory, not ours. In Romans 9:18 Paul reiterates his quot of Exodus 9:16 in Romans 9:14, Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. It is God’s will that matters, not our understanding of why He chooses to do anything. We are to be thankful He has chosen us to be in His will and to be used for His service. Our ability to comprehend the full picture of God’s plan is not possible. We must trust, obey, and have faith in His love and perfect plan for us.

I love everything about what Paul is saying in Romans 8, and in the end, Romans 8:37 says everything we need to know about our faith and what a relationship with Christ brings us, No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. No matter what our lives appear to be here on earth, we conquer it all when it comes to eternity through the gift of salvation.

Our sin nature will always be a force in our lives. It will always want to push us into doing the things we know are wrong even when we know the potential to hurt us. In Romans 7:15 Paul says I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. Without the power of the Holy Spirit in us to change, and the grace of God through Jesus Christ, we would forever face a losing battle. Praise God for showing us grace and giving us a a path to salvation.

In today’s reading we come across one of the most powerful verses in the Bible and a foundation of our faith: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are welcome to choose between a life of sin and the gift of God through Jesus Christ. While choosing Christ does not completely eliminate the sin from our life, it does eliminated the eternal consequences. Choosing to live a life of sin has only one wage; death. Without the acceptance of God’s gift to us through Christ, we are left with nothing but death. Choose life!
