2015 Day 50 – Luke 13

We like to think of heaven as a continuation of what we started here on earth. But the truth is the slate will be wiped clean and those who impacted the Kingdom of God the most will be first no matter how other men viewed them here. In Luke 13:30 Jesus says, “Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.” Let us put God first in all we do so that we will be first in His Kingdom.

The measure of a good life is not measured by the size of your bank account or the size of your home. Greed is not only a sin, it is also a distraction from making decisions that impact the Kingdom of God versus impacting our own selfish desires. Luke 12:15 says, Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Our worth is not measure by our personal accomplishments, but by the accomplishments that are made by God working through us. Nothing is more important than doing His work and serving others in Jesus name. We must always remember that everything we do should be for God’s glory.

Some of my favorite passages in the Bible are when Jesus speaks bluntly about who He is and His purpose for coming into this world. John 10:9 says, I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come and go out, and find pasture. There is no question that Jesus came to us to become the gate by which we enter into salvation and into real relationship with God. Jesus does not mince words and makes it clear that He is the only way. Whether we choose to believe, and in turn follow Him, is up to us. But when we do, we find all we need; pastures that sustain all our needs.

We are not equipped to be a light in this world unless we reflect the only true light that comes from Jesus Christ. Luke 11:36 says, Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you.” Nothing feels warmer or brighter in our lives than the light that comes from Christ.

When we have hope in Jesus, He changes everything. When we have hope we know that God is in control and our life has purpose.

2015 Day 45 – Luke 10

I cannot help but wonder if God looks down on us and wonder why we choose to worry about the things we do. We spend too much of our time worrying about things that have very little significance in the light of eternity. In today’s reading we see Martha upset with Mary because she chose to sit and listen to Jesus instead of helping her in preparations around her home. In Luke 10:41 Jesus says, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” If we look carefully, we do not see Jesus telling Martha that she is doing something wrong, just that Mary has chosen something better. While our choices may seem like good things to do, are they the best thing we can do in serving other’s and allowing ourselves to be used by God?

When Jesus came as the Messiah, he came to turn everything on it’s head from what the religious leaders expected. John 9:39, Jesus said, “For judgement I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” What the Pharisees believed about the Messiah was only partially true, but they were so concerned about tradition that they missed the details around who the Messiah would be and His purpose. For us, wasting time working towards perfection and forgetting about taking care of and loving others is not why He came. To be Christ-like does not mean to be perfect, it means servanthood to those who need it the most.

There were several places in today’s reading where Jesus made it clear who He was and why He came. The verse that stood out to me today was John 8:12, When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Being the light of the world is more than just a simple flame. It means that no amount of evil could ever extinguish That flame. Let us all remember this as we face dark times in our lives. Our lives here on earth are not meant to be perfect. They are not meant to be without pain. But with Jesus in our lives, we are never alone.

We all have moments of need. We all feel alone and the need to feel loved and connected. This is where the comfort of having a relationship with Jesus comes in. John 7:37-38, 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” When we thirst for relationship and comfort, the only one who can give us lasting relief is Jesus.

Forgiveness is almost always a difficult thing. But Jesus calls us to forgive just as He has forgiven us. In Matthew 18:21-22 Peter and Jesus have the following dialog, 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” Whatever many times we think is sufficient to forgive someone, it will always pale in comparison to the number of times Jesus has forgiven us of our sins. We are called to show mercy and grace just as Jesus has shown mercy and grace to us.
