2014 Day 326 – Matthew 19

It is easy to get caught up in the craziness of this life and feel completely out of control. But when things feel the most chaotic, we can have comfort in knowing that out of chaos God leads and makes all things possible. Matthew 19: 26 says, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Our faith should lie in the knowledge that the creator of the universe has it all under control. When we feel the least empowered, we can rest assured that God is neither surprised or intimidated by it.

God asks very little of us and at the same time He asks a lot. Faith is simple and yet incredibly complex. In Luke 17:6 Jesus says, He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” Through our faith we can accomplish great things through God’s power. We simply need to trust and obey Him and know He has the power even if we do not.

There is, of course, an eternal upside to following Jesus. But there is also a cost. Whether it is the increasing level of criticism and persecution we face in this country or the actual threat of death others face in theirs, we must understand there are potential dangers in following Jesus. In John 11:16 we read, Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” Thomas was merely saying what the rest of the disciples were already thinking. They knew the dangers of returning to Jerusalem, but out of obedience and loyalty to Jesus, they went anyway. Regardless of the dangers we may face, and because we know of the eternal impact, we must always be prepared to follow Jesus no matter the actual or potential consequences.

God wants to use us for great things, but sometimes He starts us off small. In Luke 16:10 Jesus said, Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Let us all be great in the little things for God so that when the time comes we can accomplish great things.

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a person rescued on TV. It’s not that the other people in the story are less important, it’s just exciting to see someone saved from potential death and destruction. In the same way, God’s ultimate desire is to bring each and every person into relationship with Him. While God provisioned a way through Christ’s sacrifice for us, when any one of us comes or returns to Him, there is much rejoicing. In Luke 15:7 Jesus says, I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. It is not that God does not care about the righteous, it is about saving one more of His children from eternal death.

God provides salvation to all of the world. It all began with His chosen people, but when they rejected Him, He allowed all people the ability to be saved for eternity. I won’t post the entire passage here, but in Luke 14:15-24, Jesus gives the parable of the Great Feast. In this parable Jesus talks about a man having a feast with invited guests, but because they turned down the invitation, the man opened the invitation to anyone who would accept it. This is how salvation has come to all of us and it is a privilege none of us should take lightly.

As we approach the Christmas season, I thought this ad by Sainsbury (a British supermarket chain) would be a great reminder of what the feeling of this season is really supposed to be like.

As I read today’s chapter, I could not help but laugh as I read Luke 13:14, Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” Of all the things Jesus did in the moments leading to the Synagogue ruler’s tantrum, the best the ruler could come up with was a technicality that Jesus healed on a day that was supposed to be for rest. While rest if very important, the Sabbath is meant for our wellbeing and not for our spiritualization of NOT doing something for God. God’s glory, in all we do, is the most important thing. This includes taking any opportunity to do something that glorifies Him in the process. Jesus’ healing of the woman was meant to bring glory to God, but the Synagogue ruler took the opportunity to bring glory to himself and his ability to follow rules. We must never pass up an opportunity to do good and glorify our Heavenly Father.

When God blesses us with much, He expects us to fully utilize the blessings He has given. In Luke 12:48 Jesus says, But the one who does not know and does things deserving of punishment will be beaten with few blows. For everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. The more resources and talent God gives us, and the more understanding we have of who God is, the more we are responsible to use what He has given us fully and effectively.

2014 Day 317 – John 10

Every time I read this chapter, I always find myself reading John 10:10 a few times, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly. In contrast to a thief that only takes, Jesus gives life. The life he gives to us is rich and full and, most importantly, eternal.
