2013 Day 290 – Lamentations 3-5, Isaiah 29

Compassion, Faith, Trust

God is God! He created us and brought our lives into existence. Who are we to question His sovereign will for our lives and the lives of those around us. Isaiah 29:16 says, You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? Our job is to obey and be available for His calling on our lives. He ultimately has what is best for us in His mind. We must trust that even if it is not in this lifetime, His will, in the end, will save us. Lamentations 3:22-23 says it best, 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. God’s faithfulness never fails. It is our faith in Him that we should be concerned with most.

Compassion, Goodness

Our church has been going through the Fruits of the Spirit these last few weeks. One of the videos we share when we talked about Goodness is about a 9 year old boy who built an elaborate cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store. Through the goodness of a complete stranger, he was able to experience the best day of his life, and in turn, inspire the world. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. 2013 Day 254 – Job 10-12, Psalm 121

Compassion, Peace, Protection

In today’s reading, Job’s friends once again assume his suffering comes from sin in his life. It’s a common assumption we have all probably made, however we must always remember what our role should be in the lives of our friends, especially in their suffering. We must also remember that our friends are not where we should find comfort when we suffer. In our reading today in Psalm 121:1-2 says, 1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Our help and comfort can only come from the Lord. Only God can bring stability and peace in difficult times because He is the only one who truly understands what we are going through and has the power to either walk us through it or fix it.

2013 Day 253 – Job7-9, Psalm 120

Compassion, Holy Spirit, Mercy

In today’s reading you can begin to hear Job’s desperation in trying to reach God. He wants the ability to plead his case for mercy, but he does not know how to reach out for God and wishes he had a mediator between himself and God. In Job 9:33-34 it says, 33 If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, 34 someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. This is what the Holy Spirit is for us. He is the mediator between us and God to intercede for us. In Romans 8:27 it says, And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. What Job longed for in his suffering we already have. Don’t ever forget that we are never alone no matter alone we may feel.

2013 Day 252 – Job 4-6, Psalm 119:161-176

Compassion, Mercy

One of the hardest things about reading Job is reading the words of Job’s friends who assumed Job was suffering because he had committed a great sin. Neither they nor Job knew about Satan’s conversation with God in Job 1:6 – 2:8. It is easy to blame people for their own troubles, but Job’s story clearly shows that blame cannot always be attached to those who are struck by troubled times. We must always show compassion and help people who face trials and suffering without judging them. We all face rough times and it is always good to treat others the way we would want to be treated.

Compassion, Hope

In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, Paul tells us, while we think we may be at the end of our rope, we are never at the end of our hope in God, 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. God never abandons us no matter how alone we may feel.

Compassion, Power

Psalm 105 talks about the many times God was with His people. When we look to God for wisdom and strength, He gives it to us. It may not be given in the form we would have imagined, or even liked, but God is always there for us. Psalm 105:4 says, Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. As long as we continue to look to the Lord and His strength, He will provide it for us. He never leaves us, He is always there for us.

2013 Day 204 – Hosea 9-11, Song of Songs 8

Compassion, consequences, Love, Mercy

God shows much sorrow through the words written in Hosea. He has repeatedly shown His love to His people and yet they have turned away from Him. God is not pleased when we turn our backs on Him, but His love is never ending. Even when we do things that displease Him, He never stops loving us. And even when the consequences of our sin finally catch up with us, He is right there beside us walking through whatever pain we may face. We are never alone because God never leaves us.

2013 Day 187 – Amos 1-3, Ecclesiastes 6

Blessings, Compassion, Thanksgiving

Today we begin the relatively short book of Amos. This book was written by the prophet Amos probably around the reigns of Jeroboam II of Israel and Uzziah of Judah (approximately 760-750 B.C.). Amos wrote this prophesy for Israel during a time of prosperity and peace which led the people into complacency where the rich oppressed the poor and even sold some of them into slavery. This book was a warning of what was to come because soon Israel would be conquered by Assyria and even the rich would become slaves. We, as Americans, must not grow complacent of the world around us. It is easy to feel as though the rest of the world is as blessed as we are, but the reality is the majority is not. Let us look to God for direction in how we can be used by Him in the lives of others. We can and should allow ourselves to help bless others and allow them to feel God’s presence and love.

Today’s reading in Ecclesiastes fits nicely with the theme of complacency in the book of Amos. Solomon describes how God gives some people blessings so they lack nothing their heart desires, yet they are not able to fully enjoy the blessing because they can not find meaning in their possessions. In the end, it all ends up in the same place. Ecclesiastes 6:5-6 Solomon compares a prosperous man who does not enjoy his blessings with a stillborn child, 5 Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man — 6 even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place? God blesses us for OUR enjoyment. Let us not grow complacent and lose sight of the blessings He has given us. We all end up the same way, but when God blesses us, let us be content and thankful for the blessings He has given us during our short time here on this earth.

2013 Day 38 – Matthew 11:38 – Come to Me

Compassion, Love, Redeemer

I came across the picture below and I was reminded how much this world can beat on us. There are so many events that happen in our lives and people who can tear us down and cause us to question who we are and why we were created. But what speaks to me clearly through the picture below is two things: 1) Only God can provide us true rest. No amount of sleep or distraction from our everyday pain can give us the rest we need. And, 2) Only God can define who we truly are. Listen to God and be reminded that He loves you just as you are. No one can take away the beauty and perfection of who He sees in His eyes when He looks down at you through His perfect mercy and grace. May each of you have a blessed day.

Matthew 11:28Enjoy your day of reflecting on Him. We will get back to our reading list tomorrow.
