I felt like being challenged today so I figured I would find a Francis Chan video. This video did not disappoint me. The underlying message here is God is always in control. We may think we are in control or need to be in control, but ultimately God has a perfect plan.

2013 Day 145 – 1 Samuel 29-31, Proverbs 29:1-14

Today we learn more lessons from David. In 1 Samuel 30:6 it says, David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. Even when the world seemed to be against David, he still found strength in The Lord. One of my biggest weaknesses is I look for strength through others. While there is nothing wrong in drawing strength and encouragement from others, the only strength I really need is that of The Lord’s.

2013 Day 113 – Matthew 23-25, Psalm 67

Courage, Grace, Mercy

As Jesus is preparing to become our savior, He seems to be more direct with everyone around Him. It is very methodical and at times a bit harsh. But that is exactly what God requires of us. He demands boldness and directness. As we get pushed as believers, we tend to shy away from conflict at first. God doesn’t want us to be shy and He does want us to be loving and we can be both. Being direct about our beliefs does not mean we should be jerks, but it also does NOT mean we need to be soft about boldly telling people who we are, what we believe, and what God has done to us through His grace and mercy.

For our reflection day, I thought I would share this short video. It is a great reminder that God doesn’t require great sacrifices, but little things in a consistent way. He is God and He can make great things out of the smallest of sacrifices.

I had a friend this past week who called me up and said they were struggling and were simply worn out with the grind of this life. A few hours later when I was reading through my Twitter feed I came across someone who posted this video with the caption, “If you are feeling worn out, I hope this help.” I immediately sent my friend the link. A few minutes later they responded and said this song expressed exactly how they felt. If you are feeling worn out, I hope this helps you too.

2013 Day 64 – Numbers 1-3, Psalm 28

Courage, Trust

Today we start the exciting book of Numbers. Ok, I’ll be honest, it probably won’t be that exciting unless you think balancing your checkbook is the highlight of your week. However, we must keep in mind the purpose of the book, which was to show the precision by which God would prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land. In this book we will also see the disobedience by the Israelites when they show a lack of faith by not entering the promised land because of fear. God punishes them for their disobedience by making them wait another 40 years. The thing to remember is God has a perfect plan for each of us. If we lack courage to move forward it is because of us, not God. We must always look to Him and know He is always with us. Just like we read yesterday in the book of Hebrews, He is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. We are the ones who change, not Him.

2013 Day 45 – Lent For Everyone

14 Thursday Feb 2013

Courage, Faith, Obedience, Trust

For our reflection day this week, I came across a friend of mine’s Facebook post about lent. It originated out of YouVersion as far as I can tell (hopefully no one will sue me for posting this). It was very thought provoking to me so I thought I would share it here. I hope you enjoy it.

Lent for everyone

We know very, very little about Joseph. Some legends make him an old man who died while Jesus was growing up, but we don’t know that for sure. We know he worked in the building trade, including what we call carpentry. We know he could trace his ancestry back to the ancient royal house of David and Solomon (many first-century Jews knew their family history as well as many today know the story of their favorite soap opera, or the fortunes of their football team). And we know that Joseph faced a unique personal and moral challenge, and came through it with integrity and humility. Joseph, in this passage, provides a sharply personal angle for us to approach Matthew’s gospel.

Think how it was for him. Marriage beckons, quite likely arranged by the two families but none the less an exciting prospect. A home. Children. A new status in the community — in a small town where everyone knows everyone else and where, without television, everybody else’s life is part of a complex daily soap opera.

And then the shock. Mary has news for him, news to send a chill down the spine of any prospective husband. How can he possibly believe her strange story? What will people say? So he plans, with a heavy heart, to call the whole thing off.

Then, the dream. Mary’s story is true. What’s more, she and her child are caught up, not just in a personal challenge, but in a much older, stranger purpose. God’s purpose. God’s rescue operation, long expected and at last coming true. The child to be born will be ‘Emmanuel’, God-with-us. God with us to save us: hence the name ‘Jesus’, the same word as ‘Joshua’, the great leader who brought the people of Israel across the Jordan into the promised land. The name means ‘Yahweh saves’. God with us; God to the rescue.

Whenever God does something new, he involves people — often unlikely people, frequently surprised and alarmed people. He asks them to trust him in a new way, to put aside their natural reactions, to listen humbly for a fresh word and to act on it without knowing exactly how it’s going to work out. That’s what he’s asking all of us to do this Lent. Reading the Bible without knowing in advance what God is going to say takes humility. Like Joseph, we may have to put our initial reactions on hold and be prepared to hear new words, to think new thoughts, and to live them out. We all come with our own questions, our own sorrows and frustrations, our own longings. God will deal with them in his own way, but he will do so as part of his own much larger and deeper purposes. Who knows what might happen, this year, if even a few of us were prepared to listen to God’s word in scripture in a new way, to share the humility of Joseph, and to find ourselves caught up in God’s rescue operation?

TODAY: Speak to us, Father, in a new way as we read your word. Help us to hear your voice and follow where you lead.

2013 Day 15 – Genesis 37-39, Psalm 13

Courage, Integrity, Obedience

I always love reading the story of Joseph. While I don’t think he handled his brothers in an honorable way, he was not lying when he talked about the future of his relationship with his brothers as it was revealed in his dream. Joseph was a man of integrity and honor, and while it sometimes got him into trouble, in the end, he was always willing to accept the consequences of doing what was right. Joseph is one of those men we can all model our lives after as long as we realize there are sometimes difficult choices we must make to maintain the level of character and integrity expected of us by God.

2012 Day 347 – Revelation 15

Courage, Faith

I have a simple observation from today’s reading. In verse 2 it says, And I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. They held harps given them by God. Fire represents judgement. In the end, those who stand against evil will stand victorious with God.

2012 Day 270 – Ephesians 6

Courage

Paul’s request in his letter to the Ephesians in verses 19 and 20 is a very good reminder to me about my position in Christ and what I should concern myself with. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. May I become fearless in my actions, deeds, and speech so that I can fulfill my duty as an ambassador of Christ.
