2016 Day 61 – Matthew 21

Jesus had no time for ritual or anything else that did not have an impact on people directly. Jesus could see the religious leaders wasting their time worried about trivial things while the people around them suffered and lived hopelessly. Jesus could see how they would eventually be passed up because of their stubbornness. In Matthew 21:28-31 He shares the parable of the Two Sons and He finishes with this final statement in verse 31, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” This is a powerful indictment on the religious leaders and how they completely missed the mark on who the Messiah really was and His purpose. Let us not get caught up in the things that do not matter and have no impact on eternity.

Faith, Salvation, Trust

When the disciples asked Jesus who could really be saved, Jesus replied in Matthew 19:26, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The beauty of Jesus’ reply is how true it is for all things. When we believe and trust in Jesus all things are possible. This doesn’t mean our will is done, it means God’s plan is perfect and will happen no matter the circumstances.

Faith, Trust

In today’s reading, I love Luke 17:5, The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The apostles we genuine in their request. They wanted to be radically on-board with Jesus. The problem is they did not fully understand what they were asking. To truly follow Jesus we must be fully committed. The path will always be tougher than we can ever imagine. But once we let go, our faith can be as small as a mustard seed and we can move mountains.

God’s will and His plan are perfect. As believers we do not need to fear the craziness and uncertainty of this world. In John 11:9-10 Jesus responds to His disciples concerns over returning to Jerusalem, 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not 12 hours in the daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. 10 It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.” “Day” refers to being in God’s will. As long as we walk in the light of His guidance, we will be OK. It is when we allow fear and uncertainty to rule over us that we stumble and fall.

Faith, Trust

We worry about so much in our lives. But the truth is that God is completely in control. Our feelings of helplessness come from a lack of faith and trust in the one who created all of us and wants what is best. In Luke 12:7 Jesus says, Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. While God loves all creation, He especially loves each of us. If He cares about the smallest of sparrows, how much more He cares for each of us.

Jesus never begged anyone to believe who He was. In John 10:37 Jesus says to the religious leaders, Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. He wants us to believe, but He wants us to do it of our own free will. We either believe who Jesus said He was (and showed through His miracles), and accept Him as our savior, or we don’t; the choice is ours.

As many times as I have read Luke 10:18, this time it game me chills, He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” Jesus knows exactly what Satan’s fate will be. Let us all take comfort, especially when this crazy world seems to be falling apart around us, that Jesus Christ is victorious both now and forever more.

Faith, Trust

It is never a question of Jesus’ ability to do anything, it is a question of will. When the man asked Jesus to heal his son, he asked Jesus “if you can’. In Mark 9:23 Jesus replies to the man, “‘If you can’?”  Jesus said. “Everything is possible for him who believes.” Jesus can do anything, without exception. But we must always remember it has to be a part of God’s will. We must look to be within the will of God and then we will see if the desires of our heart lines up with His.

Commitment, Faith, Obedience, Trust

Jesus was concerned with His disciples, as He is with us today, about their willingness to follow Him in both the good and bad times. Matthew 16:24 says, Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” When Jesus talked about taking up their cross, the disciples knew what he was talking about. Crucifixion was a common form of execution in Roman times and the accused were forced to carry their crosses to the execution site. Being willing to follow Jesus requires our willingness to show everyone who we are and what we believe until the very end.

Faith, Humility, Obedience, Trust

In Jesus’ day the Gentiles, right or wrong, they were considered no more likely than dogs to receive God’s blessing. In today’s reading a Canaanite woman (Gentile) came asking for a miracle from Jesus. Matthew 15:25-28 was their interaction, 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” 27  “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 28 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. While this interaction may seem very derogatory, it was the view at the time. But the woman was willing to take her perceived status in the society for the sake of healing her daughter. For us, we are no more than dogs in comparison to what God expects us to be. But when we humble ourselves and realize we deserve little more than crumbs off the Master’s table, we receive so much more.
