2015 Day 85 – Matthew 27

In Matthew 27:24, Pilate’s interaction with the crowd who wanted Jesus crucified stood out to me, When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” Pilate knew the difference between doing what was right versus what was unmistakably wrong. Even though Pilate chose not to make a choice, he allowed an unjust choice to be made. When we are faced with a difficult decision, we cannot sit idly by and watch injustice happen. We must stand for what is right regardless of the consequences.

2015 Day 84 – John 17

Faith, Trust

Today we read Jesus’ prayer to His Father in heaven. This is a beautiful and respectful dialogue from Jesus expressing His willingness to move on after completing the mission God set before Him. As I read this prayer, I could not help but wonder what it would have been like if Jesus had remained longer on earth. What if He had stayed to reign over all creation? But then I remembered that God’s plan is perfect. Jesus completed all the tasks He had set out to do. Jesus commissioned His disciples to begin passing down the gospel to the world. And then the realization hit me… God’s plan worked and I am a product of the success of that plan and so are you.

Faith, Protection, Trust

When it comes to a healthy relationship with God, obedience is key. Remaining faithful to God and all He has asked of us makes all the difference in how we deal with this life. While our life was never promised to be perfect, God promised He would always love us. In John 15:10 Jesus says to His disciples, If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. Remaining in “His love” does not mean God will keep loving us, because He always does. It means we will remain protected by His will and hedge of protection over us. Separation from God should never be an alternative because the consequences are eternal.

In today’s reading one of the things that struck me was during Jesus’ arrest, when a disciples cut the ear off one of the men in the crowd and Jesus healed the man. He did this in front of all the men in the crowd. You would think these men would recognize who Jesus was based on this alone, but they still proceeded to arrest Him. This was not an accident and was done to fulfill God’s ultimate plan. God’s will does not always lead down the easy path, but it is still perfect. We must trust His will and know His plan has a purpose that impacts the entire Kingdom, not just our personal existence.

2015 Day 77 – Mark 14

Faith, Trust

One of the things I love reading is how Jesus was both man and God. Jesus knew His role and purpose, yet He did not look forward to His human suffering. You can hear these two forces as He prayed to God in Mark 14:36, “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” God never promised our lives would be easy, but He did promise our lives would be fulfilling if we follow Him. We must all remember this life is simply a moment in the light of eternity. Living it to the fullest will not always be easy, but we have the opportunity to impact the world greatly if we listen and are willing to be used by Him.

Faith

While Jesus was rejected by the Jews as the capstone of their faith, He was ultimately accepted as the cornerstone of our Christian church. Mark 12:10-11 Haven’t you read the scripture: ” ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.’ “ Jesus was and is the foundation of our faith.

Faith, Trust

Our prayers are often motivated by our own interests. Yet Jesus tells us to ask anyway. Mark 11:24 says, Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Notice that it says that you should believe it will be yours, not that it will be yours. Our faith needs to be that all things are possible through God, but in the end it must be according to His will, not our own selfish desires.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

We tend to have faith that is limited by what we think is possible. But with God all things are possible. Luke 18:27, Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” While God is not in the business of writing blank checks, He is capable of doing anything. We must have faith that He is capable of doing everything even if He does not will it. Trust, obedience, and faith are all part of the equation in our relationship with God.

2015 Day 60 – J.I. Packer: Taking God Seriously

Faith, Obedience, Truth

I found this clip by J.I. Packer very interesting and accurate. The church is becoming something it was never intended to become. It’s supposed to be about bringing us into a true relationship with God and to truly know Him. Unfortunately, in many cases, we are failing.

2015 Day 59 – Matthew 20

Faith, Relationship, Trust

Jesus loves us all equally. When He heals, He does so because of His compassion for each of us. In today’s reading we see Jesus heal the blind beggars in Matthew 20:34, Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. When we have faith and humble ourselves to know Jesus can and will heal us from whatever is hurting us (physically, spiritually, or emotionally), He has compassion on each of us according to His will and does not leave us in our pain. We are never alone when we have an authentic relationship with Jesus.
