2015 Day 58 – Mark 10

Faith, Obedience, Trust

Jesus loves us and wants a relationship with us. And like any other relationship, it requires selflessness and an understanding that life does not necessarily get easier; though it is more fulfilling. Jesus warned His disciples of what true relationship with Him meant in Mark 10:38, “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” Jesus wasn’t ridiculing His disciples for asking to be at His side in glory, but He did warn them that the road to glory would not be easy. Those of us who think this life and the path to eternity exists without obstacles are fooling themselves.

Faith, Glory, Trust

The reality of who Jesus is does not depend on our belief in this truth. However, when we trust and believe in Him our faith allows us to do great things. In Luke 11:25-26 Jesus is talking to Martha about her brother Lazarus’ death, 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Jesus asked her to trust in Him, not because He needed her faith to perform miracles, but because her faith in Him would fulfill the desires of her heart through the miracle. We see Martha’s answer to Jesus in Luke 11:27, “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.” Even through her suffering, she was able to believe Jesus had the ability to do anything because of who He is. No matter how we feel, or whatever is going on in our lives, we must trust and believe that Jesus has the ability to do all things. This does not mean He will, but has the ability, and is ultimately for His glory.

2015 Day 35 – Matthew 16

Faith, resurrection, Trust, Truth

Most people can only believe when they see physical evidence. It is one of the reasons why some have a hard time believing in who Jesus is. But this is where faith comes in. In Matthew 16:4 Jesus said, A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. Jesus then left them and went away. Jesus used Jonah as an example of resurrection since Jonah was swallowed by a fish for 3 days just as Jesus would later be resurrected after 3 days. Jesus gave the people around Him plenty of information and signs about who He was and what He would do. But without ears to hear and a heart that is willing to believe, they missed the truth, just as people still miss the truth today.

Compassion, Faith, Hope

When Jesus visited each of these towns, the people flocked to see Him. These people were not only looking to be healed, but they were looking for hope as well. Mark 6:34 says, When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. Jesus became their shepherd who was able to teach, guide, and give hope to them. When we need guidance, the only place we need to look is to Jesus. He provides all we could ever need.

Faith, Trust

Today we read about Matthew’s account of Jesus walking on the water. What stood out to me was how much faith Peter had in order to step out and join Jesus and then how quickly he loses faith and starts to sink. Matthew 14:28-31, 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” We are just like Peter. We have moments of faith where we feel we can move mountains and other moments when even the simplest requests seem impossible. For God, nothing is impossible if we just have faith.

Faith, Truth

The more we love this life and cling to the rewards it gives to us, the more we come to realize how empty those rewards really are. In Matthew 10:39 Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” When we cling to the things of this world, we risk forfeiting all that God has promised to us in this life and the next. The best way to enjoy this life is to loosen our grasp on it and turn over control to Christ. The quicker we realize it is all for His glory, the happier we will be.

Believer, Faith, Truth

Much of the time when Jesus spoke he spoke in parables. This was often confusing to everyone around Him including His disciples. When asked why, Jesus replied in Matthew 13:13, This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” Like much of the people of our present day, the people around Jesus heard the truth. They also had knowledge of what was coming from the prophets. We can look at them and wonder why they could not see the truth, but the reality is nothing has changed since the days when Jesus was physically here. We all know the truth and have plenty of examples of the existence of God, yet many choose to simply ignore what they see and hear.

Faith, Healing, Trust

One of the most beautiful interaction Jesus had with the sick, in my opinion, was the one at the beginning of Matthew 8. The man with leprosy asks Jesus to heal him if He is willing and Jesus answers with a simple reply in verse 3, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. Jesus was so loving and willing to help anyone who had faith to believe in Him. The same applies to us today. When we believe in Jesus, anything is possible. We are not guaranteed anything will happen, but all things are possible.

Faith

I love the last verse in today’s reading because it shows Jesus knows all about human nature. John 2:25 says, He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man. Jesus did not and does not need man’s approval. He knows that the testimony of man is only as good as the faith they possess. Some of the people in the temple who claimed to believe Him would later be the same ones yelling “crucify him!” Faith and faithfulness must be maintained even when it is not popular to do so.

Faith, Salvation

While the disciples were thrilled to see Jesus, He had to remind them that He had already told them how things would play out. In fact, all of scripture leading up to Christ was fulfilled in the process of His life and death and resurrection. Luke 24:44, He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” We often forget that the entire Bible, including the Old Testament, points to the Messiah. When we allow ourselves to see the truth as God meant for it to be, we see the whole story unfold before us and we see the purpose of Christ, our Savior, in our lives.
