2014 Day 108 – Philemon

Fellowship, Forgiveness, Love

Today we read the relatively short book Philemon. This book is actually a letter written by Paul to Philemon who was probably a wealthy leader of the Colossian church. The purpose of the letter was to try and convince Philemon to accept and forgive his runaway slave, Onesimus, and to hopefully accept him as a brother in Christ. While Paul does not condemn slavery in any of his writings, he does make a bold statement when when he calls Odesimus Philemon’s brother in Christ. No matter what our status in life, whether financial or social, we are all equals in the body of Christ. More importantly, as a body of believers we must be intentional in our acceptance of all people no matter where they are in comparison to us individually.

2014 Day 52 – 1 Corinthians 7

Fellowship, Relationship

There are days I long for simplicity in life. A life where I didn’t have anything, or at least very few things. I spend to much time worrying about things. Life would be much simpler and I would probably focus on God more if I had few things to worry about. In 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul says,  29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. All of the things in are lives, whether it is relationships, possessions, or even our feelings should not own us and keep us from focusing on what is really important; our relationship with God. In the end, everything will burn and what remains is our eternal relationship with our Heavenly Father.

2014 Day 32 – Acts 17

Fellowship, Relationship

God is never far away from us. He is always near enough so we can seek Him. Acts 17:27 says, God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. God does not force Himself on anyone. He wants a relationship with us, but He also wants us to want one with Him as well. God is patient and loving and is willing to wait for us to be ready. We must remember that a life in relationship with God is much more rewarding than a life without Him. So, why wait?

2013 Day 1 – Genesis 1-2, Psalm 1

Fellowship, Wisdom

The reading in Genesis today made me thing of the time of Moses when it was written (since Moses wrote it). The way Moses describes everything God created is so literal. I love seeing the innocence and simplicity in his description of the complex world God created. As humans we like to have explanations for everything that is complex, but in reality, there is no explanation for a God who can create everything that is around us. Praise be to a God who made all of this for us.

In Psalm 1, the verse that stood out to me was verse 1, Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. We all make choices in life. We have the choice to listen to evil and half-truths or we can listen to what God has to say. God’s voice comes to us in many forms. Sometimes He speaks to us through the Bible and sometimes He chooses to speak to us through others. We must ensure we surround ourselves with people who are able to speak God’s truths into our lives.

Fellowship

Verse 17 stood out to me today, As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. It is important to have people in your life that help build you up. The opposite is also true; you must remove people who tear you down or who lead you in the wrong direction.

Fellowship, Obedience, Relationship

I love reading Paul’s letters to the early church. There is so much to digest in almost every verse. Chapter 1, verses 23-24 shows how dedicated Paul was to the church and how much he loved Jesus, 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. While Paul loved the church and genuinely loved people, his greatest desire was to be with Jesus in heaven. I think this points to Paul’s maturity and I can relate to it. When I was younger I was afraid that God would take me from this earth too early and I would miss out on too many things. Now that I’m older, I know being with God can not compare to any experience I could ever have in heaven. While I look forward to the way God chooses to use me for the rest of my life, I know my life will pale in comparison to the eternity I will experience with Christ in heaven.

Fellowship

Verse 24 made me think of the group men I’ve met with every Friday for almost two years now; A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Finding friends who stick closer than a brother is important ever person. It keeps you encourage, accountable, and motivated. Find people who can speak into your life and lead you to grow closer to God; it will change your life.

Compassion, Fellowship, Peace, Protector

Psalm 121 and 124 both had similar themes about our Helper. Psalm 121:1-2 says it well, 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. The Lord, the creator of everything, is more than capable of providing all the help we need in all we do. When it feels we are all alone, God is always by our side. When I feel alone I imagine that Jesus is standing right beside me with His arms wrapped around me. It provides comfort and it provides the visual of what I know is actually happening through the Holy Spirit. We are so blessed to have a God who cares so much about us that He never leaves us alone.

Believer, Fellowship

It is interesting to see that the disciples of Antioch were the first to be called Christians (or “Christ-ones”). According to the notes in my Bible, Antioch was a mix of Jews and Gentiles whose only commonality was Christ – not race, culture, or language. This is why I find it ironic that in our present time, the word “Christian” is almost a bad word even in our own culture. For some reason, “Christian” has become a word that brings about images of discrimination and/or separation. We need to do a better job of associating the word “Christian” with Christ as the one who can cross any boundary and unify any group of people regardless of race, culture, or language. We, as Americans especially, need to accept that being Christian does not necessarily mean it is the American version of Christianity! We must do a better job of understanding God’s intent and follow the Holy Spirit’s leading when it comes to building and maintaining the community of “Christ-ones”.

Disciples, Fellowship, Hope, Love

Today’s reading shows Jesus’ heart clearly as He prays to His Father in heaven. Jesus takes the time to not only lift up His disciples, but also to lift up future believers. In verse 9, speaking about the disciples, He says, “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.” How beautiful and reassuring for Jesus to lift up His disciples and clearly make a distinction of who really belonged to Him. Then in verse 20 Jesus talks about us, the future generations, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,” It is comforting and humbling to know He lifted us up in prayer to the Father. It makes a big difference in my day knowing I am loved and that I am covered in prayer.
