2012 Day 172 – 1 Corinthians 4

Glory, Thanksgiving

All that I have has been given to me as a blessing from God. There is nothing I have received that I can truthfully boast about. In verse 7 it says, For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? We are to be thankful and must refrain from being boastful by all the things God has provided to us. It is tough to think along those terms because I want to brag about all I have and all I don’t, but Paul reminds us that it is all from God and we should always turn the glory back to Him.

Glory, Love, Peace

There is a quote I read last night by Mark Twain that says, “The two most important days in your life; the day you were born and the day you find out why”. It really hit me between the eyes especially since I had just read verses 13-14 in today’s reading, 13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s desire is that we share in His glory because He chose us. Too often I take it for granted that God actually chose me to share in eternity with Him. There are so many times that I lose sight of the riches God has in store for me because I chose the temporary riches of this world. I know this sounds silly, but I need to remind myself daily that God deserves so much more than I give Him and yet He still loves me and blesses me. Father, remind me of my place in your heart and that my purpose is to serve you and not my selfish personal desires.

Glory, Grace, Relationship

In today’s reading we see that Paul is writing a second letter of affirmation to the church in Thessalonica. They are facing persecution and Paul is encouraging them to persevere through faith. I really like the way Paul ends the chapter by telling them how much he is continually praying for them. In verses 11-12 it says, 11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul’s prayer is not just about giving them strength to survive through their trials but that they may be called ‘worthy’ of God’s plan. Verse 12 is also powerful as Paul reminds the Thessalonians about what is important, which is for God to be glorified in them. God’s ultimate purpose is that we become like Christ. This is not something that fully happens until we see Him face to face, but it is a process that happens gradually as we build our relationships with Him and allow Him to be glorified in us.

2012 Day 59 – John 11

Glory

I love Jesus’ prayer in the second part of verse 41 and 42, “Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”” Even Jesus gives all the glory over to God. How much more do we need to do the same thing. In everything we should realize that God deserves all the credit and glory for all we have and do.

2012 Day 50 – John 9

Glory, Mercy

The disciples had a legitimate question. After all, we all question why bad things happen to good people. When they saw the man who was bling from birth, they simply wanted to know who had sinned, the man or his parents. Jesus replied in verse 3, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” This is really hard for us because we want to believe that bad things come from consequences of someone doing something wrong. If each of us realized that bad things had the sole purpose of finding a way to glorifying God, we would all have a different perspective on bad situations.

Glory, Honor

There is so much information in today’s reading. Jesus has an amazing dialog with the religious leaders. I love the way He made it clear that the glory belongs to God the Father. In the second part of verses 49 and in all of 50 it says, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.” Then Jesus makes it clear that the glory He does receive only comes from the Father. In verse 54 it says, “Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.” It is difficult sometimes to remember that everything we do is for the glory of God and no one else! Jesus is the perfect example of how we are to serve and how we are to acknowledge God as worthy.

2012 Day 27 – Matthew 11

Glory, Honor, Relationship

One of my favorite passages in the Bible comes straight from Jesus’ mouth in verses 28-30, “28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” The notes in my Bible are really good. They say that the “rest” that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace with God. It doesn’t end work for us; we still need to work, but we can work with the peace and understanding that we are working for God’s glory and are a reflection and example of Him. A true relationship with God can turn meaningless and tiring work into a spiritual and productive purpose in this life. We need to accept this as an opportunity to bring glory to Him.
