2014 Day 141 – Hebrews 4

We are never alone. God is always with us and nothing is ever a surprise to Him. When we struggle and need God, He is always aware and with us. Hebrews 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. The same is true about our sin. None of it is hidden from Him and though we are forgiven by Jesus’ blood, we must still be mindful of the truth of who we really are. This is all meant to be a comfort to us and not meant to induce fear. Ultimately God wants what is best for us because He loves us more than we can ever know.

One of the hardest things about becoming a believer is accepting that we are not called to be holy before coming to Jesus for salvation. Jesus never asked us to do anything for our salvation. He simply asked us to accept. More importantly, because He became human for us and suffered, He knows what we experience and how much we struggle. Hebrews 2:18 says, Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Jesus experienced everything here on earth that we experience. He is able to empathize, help, and love us through it all and he did it because He loves us.

2014 Day 137 – Hebrews 1

Grace, Mercy, Salvation

Today we begin the book of Hebrews. The author of this book is unconfirmed, but many think it could be Paul, Luke, Barnabas, Apollos, Philip, Priscilla, or several others. While the author’s name is not given in the Biblical text itself, it does refer to Timothy as “brother”. The purpose of the book is to present the sufficiency and authority of Christ and was mainly written to the Hebrew Christians, but as with the rest of the Bible, has key applications for us today. In today’s reading the key verse for me was Hebrews 1:3, The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. The power of God Himself, the creator of the universe, is the same power that saves us from our sins. When it says He (the Son) sat down, it means the work was finished and Christ’s sacrifice was final.

2014 Day 126 – 1 Timothy 5

Grace

I was intrigued by 1 Timothy 5:18 where Paul says, For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”and “The worker deserves his wages.” I had to look up in a couple different places to try and gain understanding of what he was actually trying to say. What I found is completely true for our current day and time in our society where we love to knock people down. No matter how good or good intentioned a leader or person of authority is, there are always people who feel they must criticize and point out faults. This is especially true of leader and people in authority, such as pastors. The problem comes from our expectations that these people should be perfect. They are no less susceptible to sin than we are and, while they deserve our respect, they also require our constant prayer and support. If you are not regularly praying for your leaders, then you have no business criticizing and/or judging them.

2014 Day 119 – Philippians 3

Grace, Salvation

No matter how good we thing we are, we are never good enough to compare to the perfection which is expected from God. It is only through Christ’s sacrifice that we attain the righteousness required from God. Once we realize this truth, everything is meaningless compared to what Christ has done for us on the cross. In Philippians 3:7 Paul says, But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. We can spend our entire lives trying to be good enough to receive enough credit for righteousness in God’s eyes. Or, we can accept the gift of salvation through Jesus whose blood allows us to experience grace from God for the righteousness we need to be in His presence.

Grace, Mercy, Wisdom

Control over our own lives is sometimes hard to do. When we are children, we live according to what we want and when we want it. But as we grow in wisdom we learn to make choices based on potential consequences and desired outcomes. Ephesians 5:14-15 says, 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 15 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. The biggest problem is not just in making wise choices, but also realizing the evils of this world are against us. Unless we live in the presence of God through the Holy Spirit, it is easy to quickly become hopeless. Through God’s presence and strength we are able to make wise choices and live in accordance to His grace and mercy.

2014 Day 99 – Acts 21

Grace, Relationship, Salvation, Truth

Today we are back in the book of Acts and so much is going on with Paul in this chapter. The Jews are very unhappy with Paul because he is challenging their belief in the Law as the absolute solution to a righteous life. Paul is unwavering and courageous in preaching the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ, but pays for it dearly as they beat him and try to take his life. The key learning today for me is knowing that sometimes doing what is expected by God may lead to doing things that are against what others believe. We are not to go around picking fights, but there are things which even the modern church calls “holy” which should be questioned and shouldn’t be part of our doctrine as believers in the saving grace of Christ’s blood. We must remember to only make holy things holy and the rest needs to be discarded as nothing more than distractions that keep us from a authentic relationship with Jesus.

2014 Day 95 – Romans 14

Grace

Too many people feel the need to dictate what is right or wrong outside of God’s word. We need to worry less about what we think is wrong in other people’s lives and concentrate more on making sure our lives are not a source of struggle to others. Romans 14:13 says, Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. We should worry more about being a source of encouragement to others more than a source of criticism and judgement.

Forgiveness, Grace, Obedience, Righteousness

Doing what is right, especially forgiveness, is tough sometimes. It involves both action and attitude. Romans 12:21 says, Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. When we find it difficult to forgive others for their actions, it is important to remember how much we were forgiven through Christ’s sacrifice. Always remember we can not allow evil to control us. Instead we must control evil through the goodness Christ showed us first.
