2014 Day 86 – Romans 6

Grace, Righteousness

There are few passages in the Bible more powerful than Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The notes in my Bible say it perfectly, “You are free to choose between two masters, but you are not free to manipulate the consequences of your choice.” Depending on which master you serve, you are paid a different wage. If you choose the master of sin your currency is death, but the currency of righteousness through Christ’s grace from His sacrifice is eternal life. The choice is simple and yet it requires a continuous choice on our parts to live a righteous life through Christ who enables us to do so.

Faith, Grace

Through Christ’s sacrifice we are all heirs of the promises of God. All that is required of us is faith; faith like that of Abraham. Romans 4:16 says, Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. There is only one God and He is the father of all His creation. When Christ was sacrificed for our sin, we were all included in the inheritance of grace by God for each and every one of us. Just as Abraham’s faith guided him to believe before there was ever any laws or rituals, so does our faith (plus nothing else) lead us to believe in Christ’s saving grace.

Forgiveness, Grace, Love, Peace

I know I have shared 2 Corinthians 12:9 before, but it is so good! But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. When you feel like you just can’t do enough to make things right it’s because you can’t… No really, you can’t! There is nothing we can do to fix our lives and reach the level of grace God has already provided for us. It is in our weakness that God shows up and gives us the rest we so desperately need. When we open up our clenched hands and allow God to take away the things we hang onto and let Him replace it with His perfect plan, we find peace and the love the way it was intended to be.

Grace, Love, Mercy, Relationship

I see believers working harder each day to show the unbelieving world the love of of God in a more deliberate way. I believe this is crucial to bringing people into a relationship with God. However, there is a danger when we compromise our beliefs and the truth in order to be more readily accepted by the non-believing world. 2 Corinthian 6:14 says, Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? We must guard our hearts and minds from the influences of this world no matter how noble our intentions may be. God calls us to be separate in our thinking and acceptance of sin while accepting the person He created and loves as much as He loves us. Our only role is simply to be a reflection of God and allow His love, grace, and mercy to bring them into a relationship with Him.

Grace, Righteousness, Salvation

Salvation is all about exchanging our sin for Christ’s righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. How grateful each of us should be for this immeasurable gift of salvation. God offered a trade of His righteousness for our sin not because He had to, but because He loves us so much. Never take it for granted.

If you have never heard of the Hip-hop artist Lecrae, then you have missed out. In this video he opens up about his past of crime, anger, and trouble, which ultimately led him to experience redemption through a powerful experience with God. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

Grace, Mercy, Power

I have read 2 Corinthians 4:7 many times, 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. God’s valuable and powerful message of grace and mercy has been entrusted to frail and fallible human beings. As the notes in my Bible put it, “Paul was not focused on the perishable container, but on it’s priceless contents – God’s power dwelling in us.” Though we are weak, God uses us and gives us power to do His work. Knowing where our power really comes from should motivate us to stay away from pride and stay in constant contact with God who is the source of our power.

Grace, Love, Mercy

In the beginning of today’s reading Paul talks about having to work harder than the other apostles to preach the gospel. Paul is not boasting, he is simply explaining the hurdle he had to overcome because of his past life as a persecutor of the early church. In 1 Corinthians 15:10 he says, But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Because of our past we are sometimes forced to work hard to overcome the perception of others. This has nothing to do with the grace God has granted to each of us. As Paul stated “by the grace of God I am what I am.” Who we are is established by God and not by men. Men are always welcome to their opinions, but that is all it is… an opinion.

Grace

I’m a big fan of John Piper. In this short video he talks about the sustainability of God’s grace. Without His grace it would be difficult, if not impossible, to make it in this world without God’s grace. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

Grace

The grace we receive through Christ’s sacrifice is never to be discounted or taken for granted. We all sin no matter how hard we try or how good we think we are, but salvation from eternal death is real through God’s grace. It is important to understand what 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “Everything is permissible for me,”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything. Just because we are saved through grace, does not mean we are free from the consequences of making bad decisions. A righteous life will always be the most rewarding on this earth.
