2013 Day 208 – 1 Corinthians 6-8, Psalm 98

Grace

God’s grace is an amazing thing. Through His grace we are saved from all our filthy sin. However, there are still consequences to sin, which is why God wants us to be righteous. In 1 Corinthians 6:12 it says, “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. God gives us the right to do anything, but our choices are not always beneficial to us and that is why He wants us to be righteous and follow His commands to protect us.

Grace, Obedience, Relationship

As we continue to look at David’s life in our reading today, we see how blessed he was by God. While we know David was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, we do know that God called him a man after His own heart. God does not expect perfection from any of us. He expects us to have a real relationship with Him. We are redeemed by God’s grace and He does not expect perfection in order to lead us and bless us. We must look to God’s guidance in our lives and act according to His leading. Perfection has never been and never will be the goal.

2013 Day 195 – Andy Stanley: Grace and the Ten Commandments

Grace

I love listening to Andy Stanley. He is one of those people who can take a complex subject and make is seem simple. I am sharing this video because of the simple message of Grace he shares. The basic message in this video is that Law is not the opposite of Grace, Law is the extension of Grace. God provided His law to keep us safe, not to imprison us through His rules. I hope you enjoy this quick message. (Please ignore the final few minutes of the video where it talks about donations for a free copy of the book)

2013 Day 194 – 1 Chronicles 12-14, Ecclesiastes 12

book of ecclesiastes, Forgiveness, Grace, Obedience

Today we finished the book of Ecclesiastes. While I have read this book a few times, this time it seemed to grab my attention. In the end, the last couple verses summed it up. Verses 13 and 14 say, 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. We may be successful in hiding our sin from the rest of the world, but God knows all that we have done in this life. By committing our lives to Him, we dedicate all we are to serving Him. Thank God for His grace and forgiveness, but let us not kid ourselves that He doesn’t see our sins. Let us work to live lives that honor God instead of a life that disappoints Him. Anything else we dedicate time and energy is meaningless.

2013 Day 180 – Hillsong NYC Baptisms

Baptisms, Faith, Grace, Obedience

Baptisms are one of my favorite things to witness in another believer’s life because they are the outward expression of what God is already doing inside of a person’s heart, mind, and spirit. I came across this short Hillsong NYC video they produced about their baptisms. The reason why I love this video is because it is so genuine. When baptism is done in an authentic way, it is simple and yet so powerful. I hope this video moves you the way it moved me.

2013 Day 168 – Philemon 1, Psalm 85

Grace

Today we read about Philemon. Philemon was probably a wealthy man and a supporter of Paul’s ministry. He was also a member of the Colossian church. This letter was written by Paul as an appeal to Philemon to forgive his runaway slave, Onesimus. This book is about showing grace to others as God has shown grace to us. The words of Paul can be as applicable to us in our lives today as it was to Philemon back then.

2013 Day 167 – Jonah 1-4, Psalm 84

Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Relationship, Repentance

Today we read the story of Jonah. Jonah is very much like most of us. God has a plan and wants to use us to fulfill His plan, but many times we fight Him on it. We make excuses and find ways to avoid doing what we know He wants us to do. In the end, Jonah was finally obedient to God and when God blessed Jonah’s effort by turning the people of Nineveh from their evil way, Jonah became resentful of God for allowing the people of Nineveh to be forgiven. We can sometimes be like this too. There are people in our pasts who have hurt us or caused pain in our lives and God has blessed them. This is sometimes a hard pill to swallow, but it is God’s prerogative to forgive who he chooses to forgive. It helps to remember that God forgave us too. None of us is exempt from a sinful life and all of us need His mercy and grace to come into His presence.

We also read Psalm 84 today. The beginning of verse 10 is one of the most beautiful passages I have ever read, Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. We are nothing without God’s presence in our lives. If we could only be in God’s presence for a single moment, it would be enough. Thankfully God desires for us to be in His presence on a constant basis. It is up to us to take advantage of that desire and choose to be with Him.

2013 Day 153 – 2 Samuel 11-13, Psalm 73

Grace, Mercy

David was known as a man after God’s own heart. But even David was not perfect and sinned. God is gracious to forgive, but there are always consequences to sin. In 2 Samuel 12:13-14 it says, Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die.” Sin is sin and we all commit sin in our lives. We should all feel God’s grace and mercy and move away from it as quickly as possible. But the consequences of sin can be great especially when we allow it to drag out and refuse to repent from it.

Grace, Mercy

There are many lessons to be learned from David’s life. Today’s reading shows how much respect David had for God’s anointed king. Once again, David had the opportunity to end Saul’s life and rid himself of the man who wanted him destroyed. Instead, David spares Saul’s life and shows the king respect along with giving the king an opportunity for reconciliation. There have been times in my life where someone I considered an enemy was in a position where I could get revenge by my words or actions. Unfortunately, I didn’t always show grace to them. As I’ve gotten older I have learned the benefit of reflecting God’s grace on someone whether I feel they deserve it or not. Most of the time showing someone grace benefits me more than it benefits them.

Grace, Righteousness, Salvation

I guess one could argue, if God loves to forgive, why not give Him more to forgive. Romans 6:1-2 says, 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? The purpose of salvation is to free us from the power of sin and the hold it has on us. Once we are saved, we should no longer want to be controlled by sin. Does this mean we need to be perfect? No, but we should seek righteousness through the saving power of Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
